All the police in Leeds was because of the football match against Bradford.

...so just normal rioting then? ;) This issue has galvanised a number of my colleagues - one normally mild mannered grandmother said "They should call out the army and have them shoot the looters in the legs!"

Quote
When the security shutters came down at the 3 mobile phone shop in Streatham while it was under attack on Sunday night, one rioter remained trapped inside.

Police re-opened the shutters to find a looter — on a mobility scooter.

A 3 employee, who declined to be named, said the individual had been left behind, unable to keep up when the mob fled the store."

In other words, just the usual stuff!

Yes, normal policing to deal with a Leeds game.

Just that everyone is now getting jumpy. Yesterday afternoon in Barnsley it was reported that the shutters were down and shops had closed in the shopping centre, so people were speculating it was about to kick off....it turned out there'd been a power cut so because tills and lights weren't working they'd had to close the stores for a hour!

Haven't read through the entire thread but I'm wondering - is anyone else experiencing a total lack of questions or comments about the rioting from friends and family in America?  It's bizarre that no one (bar one friend who was just here a couple weeks ago) has expressed concern or asked about it.  Normally my family tends to ask about this stuff and I have a friend and former co-worker who always thinks we live in London  ::)

There's just not that much coverage in US media -- too much else going on. You have to go to BBC to get any real sense of what's going on.
It's odd because often the media picks up on these things, as if to point out how much better off we are in the US.

Yesterday it was finally making more news than it has in the past few days, but like BD said, there's just too much else going on.

My dad didn't even ask about us until this morning! And he works with a few UK-expats who live in the US. Most friends think it's only in North London as well, until I tell them a bus, a bakery, and a betting shop were all set on fire about half mile away.

DW and I were discussing this last night, that none of her US friends and family on facebook or email have mentioned it. Yet when the rioting in Greece happened she got comments such as "we hope you guys will be ok and it doesn't spread"! We know it's getting some coverage there because we've seen on CNN's The Situation Room and also on Fox (which her dad and sister watch). No doubt though when she does speak to her sister we'll be told that we are having race riots or it's "left versus right" given that's the slant Fox were putting on it last night! Perhaps because it's being reported as being in London they've finally got the message that we don't live near London!

It was on Access Hollywood last night according to my friend.  And the New York Times and PBS and CNN and Fox.

How much more out there does it need to be?

Did John Oliver do a report, BD?  I might try to watch it later.

Is anyone here from Carmarthen, S. Wales? I just read in a friend's Facebook status that Debenham's in Carms was looted, and there are gangs and police vans in the streets. Can anyone confirm this?!?!

The Guardian said it had spread to parts of Wales.

They tried to kick off in Cambridge last night, but the train station is so far away from the centre of town I think the poor dears were too tired.
