A couple Questions on buying a car and driving licenses
« on: August 07, 2011, 11:48:32 PM »
Hi everyone,

I had a couple questions and was hoping someone could help me out.

1. Can I buy a car if I only have my US license?

2. I've only been here 3 months, and understand I can't apply for apply for a provisional license until I've been here 6 months. Can I take the behind the wheel test in my own car?

3. Is there any equivalent of Consumers Reports for UK cars? They do repair ratings for all models of cars in the US. I'm sure someone must do something similar here.

Thanks  :)

Yes you can buy a car.

If you have a drivers licence before you came to the UK they are good for 12 months.

The UK people are keen car enthusiast so there are many good sources for road test of cars. Try "Which" as a Consumers report type of magazine.

Also, if you're "normally resident" in the UK you can get a provisional licence.  You need to do that and pass a road test before 12 months has elapsed since your move.

Your licence is good for the first 12 months as previously stated, so make use of that time to get some driver training and pass a UK driving test.

Where do you go for a provisional license? And how do they count the 12 months? I've been here since December as a tourist, but only got my spousal visa this month.

The 12 months starts from when you become a resident.  You can apply at a post office or online (I applied online) at

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/NeedANewOrUpdatedLicence/DG_10012514

You will need to mail them some documents, but it will tell you what you need to send.

Good luck!
