Why do they always explain how to fasten your seatbelt? It's a seatbelt, it's not hard.

Just in case there's even one person who's never used one, they need to know how to get out in an emergency. Also it is different from a car seatbelt, so some people do ask how do do it even after the safety briefing.

I believe too, that its to drill into your head in an emergency, with all the panic going on, just how to get out.  So you hear it multiple times.

So Ian, how can you bag the best meals you can get in economy class?

Reserve a special dietary meal. Kosher, oriental, vegetarian, etc. Usually the special meals get served first, so they don't sit in the ovens as long. That's usually what makes the food bad, fresh airplane food is actually pretty good IMO.

I read online once that if you order a specialty meal it's much nicer than the ordinary meals that they give to everyone...Since then I have it in my BA profile that I want seafood meals..and they end up being really nice! Last time we flew I had grilled Talapia...
Besides they seem to sit better with my gastric bypass then the normal fare...

Although I just remembered this kept us from getting an upgrade when we flew to Sharm with BA last year...We would have been given First Class if I hadn't had it in my profile.... :-\\\\

I am not a vegetarian but I always put a speacial meal as vegetarian. I don't eat much meat, and even if I did, the meat on planes is disgusting! Even though the vegetarian meal is usually a microwaved veggie burger or some rice and vegtables, its better than the normal meals to me  ;D

There are no microwaves on the airplane, they use convection ovens a lot like your home toaster oven.  That's why the meat gets really tough especially if it's been in there a while.

It is super important to me that I can find a cheap flight this time back to the UK. (Well, it's always been important, but now more so than usual, since I just dropped a wad of cash on the visa, priority processing, and will do for my moving expenses.)

I don't understand the fluctuation in prices with various airlines and on various days. Is there a "in general" rule that flights are cheaper on certain days or certain weeks of the month?

Also, I don't plan on using the return ticket - so is there a date I can book that would make the overall ticket cheaper? (like a week after I arrive, or a month or ?) And what do I do about not using the return ticket - am I suppose to contact the airline and tell them?

Thanks for any advice!

Yes, flights are cheapest on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.

Sale fares are usually only posted a couple of months in advance.

The lowest fares are usually found on the airline's own website.

Try skyscanner.com.

You might be able to keep a portion of the ticket if you call and cancel it at least 24 hours before departure time.

Planning a trip 'home' to the USA for Thanksgiving. Wondering when I should purchase tickets? Does the price go up and or down as the date I want to travel draws near? I prefer to fly on Tuesdays or Wednesdays as well.

I was hoping to fly to the US over Thanksgiving, but unfortunately it's looking too expensive (at least for all the searches I've done anyway).

Back on July 17th, the cheapest tickets were £475 (flying on a Saturday... they were more like £450 for a weekday). We nearly booked them then, but didn't because they were non-refundable and I need to apply for a new visitor visa before I go (didn't want to risk losing all the money if I don't get the visa in time).

However, looking online again this weekend, the same tickets are now £575 :(. It's looking at the moment as if we won't be able to afford to go now, unless they advertise some cheaper tickets closer to the time we want to go.

Yeah, for a holiday when they're guaranteed to fill up, there won't be any sale fares, so it'll just go up as the cheapest seats sell out.

So when is the best time to buy tickets for holiday times?  I've been keeping my eye out for fares for Christmas, and I'm wondering when I should stop checking and just buy it!
