So virtually the same, really. Are tickets a lot more expensive in other parts of the country??

At the Vue in Bristol, it's £8.40 for a full-price adult ticket, but on certain days and times you get 10% or 25% off. We do have a smaller, independent cinema which is only £4.95 per ticket (so a really good price on 2-for-1 Orange Wednesdays), but they don't have surround sound and sometimes it's hard to hear the film.

When I was a teenager, I used to be able to go to the Odeon in the centre of Bristol for £2 a ticket (£2.50 for the premium seating... which I seem to remember we splashed out on when we went to see Men In Black :P), but their prices are now £6.50 for adults and £5.40 for teens.

We only have one cinema! £6 is the standard full adult ticket price, but they do £2.99 bargain shows once in a while, and always £3.99 matinees which gets you tea and a biscuit as well!  ;D

London obviously has loads of cinemas but I haven't been to one in central. Whenever we want to see a movie, we go to the O2 in Greenwich, one in Surrey Quay or the one in Hammersmith. Never had much of a problem with adverts, but I did notice other types of adverts than you would see in the states. One day I thought, 'huh, car insurance? I don't think I have seen one of those adverts in a US cinema.' Adverts of the coming attractions are fun though, sometimes better than the movie  :P

My local cinema here is just slightly cheaper than the one I used to go to in the US. I've just checked prices and the US one is $10.50 (£6.45) while the UK one is £6. So virtually the same, really. Are tickets a lot more expensive in other parts of the country??

The smaller cinemas I used to go to in the US used to show commercials before the movie all the time! Local car dealers, carpet stores, etc. Maybe they've stopped now. It wasn't all that long ago! Is it a new law?

I think within the last 15 years or so. I remember a huge lawsuit brought to the Supreme Court about it and right after a decision was made, the T20 and other similar things started showing up. They can show adverts before the the time the move is supposed to start (so say its to start at 6.50 until then they can show adverts) and then get to the previews.

Trying to google to see if Im right is proving tough (a lot about illegal downloading) but nothing is coming up. Now thinking my memory is wrong. Its been a good 7 years since I went to the movies with some regularity..

I think you are correct.  They are allowed to show ads before the film while people are filing in, but not after stated time for the movie to start.

I went to the movies last night, in Times Square.  It was $13 and much have had 30 minutes of previews.  Anyone else see Anne Hathaway attempting a Yorkshire accent in One Day?

DF and I sometimes go to the movies in Leicester Square.  I think it costs £10 when its not 3D.

The trailers for forthcoming films always seem to show far too much, after the first minute I've usually decided if I'm interested, and if I am I don't want them to give away any more of the plot. They usually give far too much away.

They showed a clip on Look North (our local news programme) mentioning that an American actress plays a Yorkshire woman.....they didn't play enough for us to see what the accent was like but DW was interested to hear it has she says she'll never be able to do the accent.

I haven't seen the film or even the trailers, but the interweb is abuzz with the laughable awfulness of her accent. So I'm kind of dying to hear it!  ;D :P

Guardian has the clip for free.

Its not impressive. She keeps going in and out of her American accent with some generic POSH British accent.

I love Anne Hathaway, but her accent is just bad.  However, most Americans won't know and she does bring in money at the box office.

Just to add in what others are saying about prices

Out local cinema is an Empire Cinema and on Tuesdays and Thursdays they do tickets for £3.95 and if you book online (70p extra per ticket) you get a free upgrade to premium seating. I think this is an absolute bargain and we have seen loads of films this summer! You also get to choose your seats.

However the cinema is pretty old and we recently went to a Vue in Watofrd which was a lot nicer but double the price........

Wow. I heard no Yorkshire at all. Just a really bad American/British accent. Yeesh.
