Clearing

Has anyone gone through it? I've been told by a University that if I apply through clearing that I can possibly go straight into 3rd year which would be ideal. Can anyone tell me what to expect or what I should say? They said it needs to be done via telephone and I've never gone through that before. I'm assuming I don't need references or a personal statement? Just my marks so far?
