Travel insurance? Needed?
« on: August 19, 2011, 02:14:42 PM »
So, Last time to went to England, i took out travel insurance thru expedia.
Definitly NOT worth it. When I got hurt over there they were completely useless to talk to, and I ended up not using it and just sending the claim to *My* health insurance.
Now Is this something they look at at Immigration? I had it stapled to my itinerary last time so I didn't even pay attention, i think she was looking for hotel reseverations more then anything. Anyways Just curious because I'm thinkin' I'll just save the money and Present my health insurance card if they ask. Just curious to know *If* this could be an issue?

They don't usually ask, but with the new rules coming in about enforcement of NHS debts, they may start looking at it. If your own health insurance covers you abroad, just bring proof of that and you'll be fine. The main reason for travel insurance is for travel related issues like cancellations of flights and stuff, but you can get that from other providers and it won't cost as much.

Travel insurance is not a requirement, it's basically to give you piece of mind when you travel. I even travelled to the US loads of times without any travel insurance. Now I have an annual policy as part of my bank account.

I bought it when I visited the UK, but I do think my insurance would have covered medical stuff.  It is more useful for missed flights and lost luggage.  I would still think it's entirely up to you whether you think it's worth it or not.

I've never had an IO ask to see my insurance when I visited the UK - they were more interested in discerning whether I was a genuine visitor and would return home.

However, with the new NHS debt rules coming into play for visas, it would probably be a wise move to have insurance of some kind to cover medical expenses when you're visiting.

Well I'm sure its going to come up as to why I'm exactly back to the UK so soon, which is in all honesty I didn't get to see everything last night because of the injury. I was basically bound to the hosp and their testing they needed the last week. So I'll have my health insurance card, proof my NHS bill was paid, and the No fly order from the NHS from last time, just to cover all my bases :)
