American food in Manchester?
« on: August 20, 2011, 01:29:39 AM »
Hello,

I will be moving to Manchester next week, and I was wondering if anyone knows of any American food stores in the Manchester area.

Thanks :)

Costco :)...Selfridges has some - but it is costly. Of course there is also Krispy Kreme Donuts...is there something in particular you are looking for?

Isn't there a US-Sweets shop on the top floor of the Arndale Centre?  I remember Lucky Charms cost something ridiculous like £5, though.

American Soda is in Ashton U Lyne, like a 20 minute drive from the city centre, Selfridges has some, Asda Trafford Park, some Tescos, and of course, COSTCO!! Lots of American food to be found around Manchester!

Your best bet, as others have said, is probably Selfridge's (either in City Centre or Trafford Centre) where the Food Hall has a decent (but very expensive) selection of North American foods. If I recall correctly, for example, last time I was there a box of Lucky Charms was GBP 9.99! But if you want it, they may well have it.

Costco is also a good bet though unlike in North America not everyone can join in the UK. You (or your spouse) have to fall into an eligible category - generally based on profession or employment (my wife has access as an NHS employee). There are two near Manchester - Trafford (just across from the Trafford Centre) or another one in Oldham.

We live in Manchester so if you'd like any more pointers about anything just drop me a private message.

Loads and loads of good eats in Manchester, fabulous Chinese food in Chinatown, awesome Indian food in Rusholme, great pub food all over, Piccolino & Carluccios both do great Italian food in the city centre. I live in Chorlton and we have a handful of good eateries, The Lead Station is pretty good, the Horse & Jockey. And of course the Trafford Centre has all the chain restaurants you need....

Best Chinese food in Manc is definitely the Tai Pan on Upper Brook Street..yummy.
Of course it all depends on what part of Manchester you live in. Let us know where you are going to be. I have been in Manchester since 1993, so I have seen restaurants come and go!

Going to look for housing next week and would LOVE a great fish and chips or steak and ale pie not from a chain!!!  Any suggestions probably near the city centre or uni?  One thing I have missed the most since leaving and would be a greta birthday treat:)

Thanks everyone for all of the responses. We will be renting a flat in walking distance from City Centre. I've tried Selfridges and bought some cake mix and oreos and spent like 12 pound for the two. I know that was ridiculous for some cookies and cake mix, but I was craving American chocolate cake. We will try ASDA and see what we can find there. I'm bringing a lot of food stuff, but I know it won't last very long.

I was also thinking about bringing some ball park hot dogs and smoked sausages. Are we allowed to bring those into the country?

Arndale! I'm always there whenever I'm in UK. Do you remember what the shop is called?

People hate when I ask this question, because technically "Amercian" style chinese food is not "real" chinese food, but do you know of any chinese restaurants that serve Amercican style fried rice etc...?

This UKBA pamphlet - http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/sitecontent/documents/travel-customs/bringing-food.pdf -
seems to suggest that this is not allowed.  :(

Nope, you are only going to find Hong Kong style chinese food in the UK generally, szechwan (sp) chinese food is really an American thing!

A good hint on getting American foods cheaper...At the end of the month Selfridges often has food marked down bc they are close to their expriry, as does American Soda.
