...szechwan (sp) chinese food is really an American thing!

Hee!  And I always thought it was to do with the Sichuan Province of southwestern China!  Although saying that, I agree that American-Chinese food is no more authentic Chinese-Chinese food than British-Chinese food is.

If anyone does want something closer to what you'd get in China, I always recommend Red Chilli - there's one in Manchester, Leeds, York & Bacup.  It's not for the faint of heart though, as some of the food is very spicy (not all) & there are things like pig cheeks, offal, etc on the menu.  Whenever we go, the place is packed out with east Asians = a good sign it's close to the genuine article.  It's the only Chinese I've found that I actually like over here, so far!  :)

Which may or may not help aBlessing in the search for American style fried rice.  :P

Yep, I think Red Chilli would be your best bet as well.  I actually like it loads more than Tai Pan. They have some things (sweet and sour pork and etc) that pretty much taste like home, and make sure to try the crispy duck over here--it is AMAZING. :)

Where is Red Chili in Manchester? I am a fool for the food at Tai Pan, never been to another Chinese that I like more! My son loves the spring rolls....crazy kid.

Racheeeee, I just saw on their website - there's two in Manchester:

Manchester Portland Street
70-72 Portland Street, Manchester, M1 4GU

And:

Manchester Oxford Road
403 - 419 Oxford Road, Manchester, M13 9WL

I don't know Manchester, but hopefully you'll know where these are!  :)

The Brits I work with don't like it - it doesn't taste like they are used to a Chinese takeaway tasting.  It's more of a sitdown restaurant, IMO, but you can get takeaway too!

But my husband & I just love it!  And so do a lot of east Asians - judging by the customary patrons in there.

Oooh, there is a great Greek restaurant in Sale called something like Zorbas, and I love this Thai place called Jitrada, they do a cheap buffet on Sundays. Sale is a really nice place to live!

I go to the Red Chilli on Oxford Road quite a bit. It's right near the hospital (and the Uni), and we can walk there.
There's also a gorgeous Thai restaurant in the city centre: Chaophraya.  Absolutely lovely food. And Gaucho's if you want amazing meat (though PRICEY).
The "Kro" chain also does decent food, really. And they have specials and etc. And Rusholme is a must for curry!

Cool, my husband has been checking out all the restaurants and stuff in the area for weeks now. He will randomly email me with new places he's found while we are at work. We love Thai and Greek food and I will remember the recommendations when we go out for our first meal there. I'm glad you said Sale is a really nice place to live as I've never been there but my husband's family lives there so we're moving there. Cheers!

I live in Manchester as well, am finishing up my MA here. There is a worldwide foods in Rusholme, they have some american stuff at times. Bought some Franks red hot sauce along with Mt. Dew from Dubai.
The best chippy is Leo's on Oldham st.

I hope to find a job in the area and will be applying for the post study work visa.
