Help with kitty
« on: August 21, 2011, 05:11:39 AM »
I might have to write in different posts so that all of my questions don't drive you all bonkers.

Did I read correctly, that I could reduce trips to vet from four to three? Like the microchip can be done and then the rabies in one visit? Then the blood test and last, the tick and tapeworm?

Thanks

My vet said the 2 could be done at the same visit, yes. Whether that would hold true under DEFRA, I don't know. If you are traveling after Jan 1, 2012, they have new regulations were the animal doesn't have to be blood tested though and they are currently decideing on whether to continue with the tapeworm requirment.

Thanks so much for fast reply. This would be WONDERFUL if I could skip the blood test and the last visit! I know you people on here will keep us informed.

I'm not moving until Oct 2012 (hopefully!) and didn't even know about the change until I became a member on here. But yeah, after the 1st of Jan the blood test isn't a step - unless your coming from a unlisted country, I believe, don't quote me on that - but they may still decide that we have to treat them for tapeworms so depending on when you are moving or what not, I would check the DEFRA website to see if they have come to a decision on that.

Have you called any airlines to get prices yet?

Thanks!

I don't know how to travel with my cat yet. See my other post. If I need a poet (oops that should read pet but he could use some calming poetry!) relocation company would they do the airline part?

When my fiance and I checked into using pet relocation companies - which we decieded for us it would be cheaper not to use them - most of them do handle the airport paper work but I would still personally make sure everything is getting done. I have read a few horror stories were the company didn't do something on the certificate or didn't get something done that the airline required and it caused even more $$$ for the people.

Depending on when you do the process, it could be 2 or 3 trips.

Leaving pre-2012: 3 visits - one for microchip/vaccine, one for blood draw, one for tick/tapeworm
or
2 visits (only if they have a current vaccine and you're willing to risk the slight chance the blood test fails) - one for microchip/vaccine/blood draw, one for tick/tapeworm

Leaving post-2012, 2 visits - one for microchip/vaccine, one for tapeworm (tick won't be required)

Also remember at the tick and/or tapeworm visit, you'll need to get whatever paperwork the airline wants to prove the animal is OK to fly.

they are currently decideing on whether to continue with the tapeworm requirment.

From what I've heard, the tapeworm requirement will still be in place, but the 24-48 hour rule likely won't be (so it'd be more like 3-5 days or something).

Remember to check with the airline as well. I know Delta requires you tohae a healthy certificate signed by the USDA within a ten day time frame, and that has to include your travel time and landing in the UK.

Thanks. The time frame will be a bit easier if you can call any of this easier...Think I will talk to vet clinic ahead of time to be sure they are up on it all.

Don't forget to look into heat embargo time lines for the airlines if you are flying during the summer.

When it gets down to the time, I will be back on here to ask the chronological way of it all!
