Split: Mistaken for Canadian

I remember when my fiance and I first started dating, I kept calling him British and one day he stopped me and was like 'I'm English, not British." I never knew there was a difference until that day! But apparently there is and I can never remember how it goes - I think British is someone who is from the UK but not actual England itself whereas English is someone from England. I don't know, lol

For some reason this thread is reminding me of the conversation with my best friend when she asked me, "How are you going to understand them when you move to the UK?" 0.0

I get that when I refer my DH as English...and quickly get told by himself he isn't English or British...he is Manx...different all together....

My husband feels very strongly about being English, but he doesn't mind British.  I'd say he's English and British and I'm American and British, but not English. 

My husband hates the English, England (especially London), and everything it stands for and he always votes SNP. Did I mention he's English? He's okay with either British or English, but would describe himself as English.

I prefer USian and have no desire whatsoever to get under people's skin. I think it's cute and, importantly, shorter.

How do you pronounce that in a way that's all that shorter?  I can think of one way that's the same number of syllables and another that is shorter by one.  Or are you just saying that it's shorter as written?  Like text speak?

I pronounce it "us-ian" (not U-S-ian) but I meant shorter as written though not text speak. Icky icky text speak. Those would be my biases showing, right? Aloud I try to say "I'm from the US" as opposed to "I'm American" to avoid all of the "America as continent(s) vs. country" issues.  Of course someone else pointed out that it's the "United States of Mexico" so really there's no way to win. 

But I use it because it's the label I like, for me - not to ruffle feathers or tweak noses or be obnoxious.

Poor guy stumbled over his apology and saying how he just assumed because "..the damn Yanks seem to be every where!"
