Oh my, Kerri!  It reminds me of my parents' house. When they bought it, the kitchen had teal carpet as flooring.  Yes, teal carpet...in the kitchen.  After a number of years they could finally afford to redo the kitchen.  They go to tear up the carpet, a moment of pure joy, only to find black and red checkered tile underneath.  :o

When we were doing the refurb on R's bathroom we discovered bright teal, peach and DIY texture paint from the 80's.  [smiley=puke.gif]

Its just shocking what you find when you re-do your home here.. Kitchen floor had cork tiles GLUED to the floorboards. They were probably installed in the 60s or something to prevent the cold and damp air from the cellar getting through. Poor builder spent two days removing it by hand when we remodelled our kitchen last year.

When we redid our bedroom a few years back, theres was woodchip everywhere. Someone decided it was appropriate for it go on the ceiling as well. When we tried to use the steamer to remove it, it turned to mush and made it stickier and impossible to remove. Took a week to remove everything and we were still finding flecks of woodchip through out the house two years on...

I never got the carpet in the kitchen/bathroom in either country.  Why do people do that?

either 1) too lazy to remove paper #1 or 2) impossible to remove w/o a possible new plaster job.

whatever you do, on NOT add layer #3  :D

Could it be that the wallpaper was originally white and then someone painted it blue and this was the overlap?

Nope it was the same paper wrapped around the chimney twice. One was white, the other painted blue. Partner tells me this was/is common practice if people cant afford to get walls skimmed with new plaster and want to have a flat surface for new wallpaper..  Its still moronic.  ::)

That wallpaper disaster baffles me just as much as a lot of the rentals I have viewed that have different types of floral carpeting in EVERY single room ??? When I went to visit my bf I was introduced to both his grandparents and great grandpa. Lovely people, very welcoming HORRIBLE CARPETING (where floral came to DIE) I was very polite and charming with them, but when we left I told my bf we're NEVER living in a house with that typr of carpeting :D

The house we live in now was apparently pretty bad.  The owners re-did it a little while ago, but one thing they couldn't afford to do was plaster over all the Artex in the house.  The only rooms that don't have it are the kitchen and the 2 bathrooms which had both been gutted.  Otherwise, every wall and ceiling is covered in this textured nightmare.  Apparently it was a pretty popular at one point and is irreversible.  You just have to tear it out or spend a bunch of money plastering over it.

Sometimes i just have to shake my head.  ;)
I think I've got something like that on the ceilings in my house, which was built in 2006.  I bought it after everything was finished, and probably wouldn't have wanted the textured ceiling. A bit of texture on the walls here is pretty normal.

Yeah, I don't think I would mind the texture on the walls so much if it wasn't meant to imitate wood grain or ferns!  :P  ;)

Oh envious I am of ya'll with "interesting" decor...

I've rented for the last 10 years and everywhere has always had boring magnolia walls and neutral brown/beige carpeting and no landlord has ever let me do anything.  How Boring [smiley=sleeping2.gif]!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was just thinking this morning how nice it would be to own a house and paint it any colour I darn well please and to put up hideous chip board and floral carpets up if I wanted.   ;)

Sigh...
I've never gotten food on my underpants!
