Oh how I mourn boring taupe walls with white trim and beige carpets.  I thank God every day that I don't have navy blue carpeting with red checks or psychedelic roses. But, I do have a baby blue room, 2 yellow rooms, a pink closet, yellow landing, and pinkish taupe sitting room.  Different patterns on every wall.  Swirly doodles in one room and little boxes in another. It motivates me to job hunt and save up a down-payment for a little house with boring taupe and beige.

Our house is listed, so we can't sneeze without planning permission. And that's a bit of cheek, because the heart of the house is old, but it was heavily altered in the 1970s. It is a very funky place.

Every time I hear a chunk of plaster rattle down the vacuum cleaner, I think to myself, "I've just hoovered up a precious relic from the reign of Elizabeth I."

LOL, does the council in your business on a listed house extend to the interior or is it just the exterior?

Its not so much the council, but the people in charge on conservation of listed properties. This can include the inside (down things as unimportant as how a wall is built and insulated all the way up to exposed beam and brickwork) and the outside - as well as the grounds.

Yep. We could be on the hook for doing anything untoward to the trees. The woman who lived here before us did a fair bit of remodeling upstairs, which was apparently a gigantic drama (the brand new doorway to one of the rooms upstairs only comes up as high as my collarbone, because that's "in keeping with the character of the house" -- never mind it's by far the shortest door in the place).

Could be worse. There could be crested newts in the garden.
