Applying next week to move to the UK!
« on: September 01, 2011, 07:32:34 PM »
Hello,
My husband just found this site, and I'm very thrilled about all the help I've gotten even just today.

My story:
Met my husband online 4 years ago, he traveled here (USA) in Feb of 2009 to meet me in person - and that trip solidified our relationship. I traveled there (UK) in November of 2009 to meet his friends and family. We applied for a US Fiance visa last summer and got approved and my husband moved to NYS in October of 2010. We got married in November of 2010. We decided to postpone applying for the change of status visa over here, and we are instead applying for the marriage visa for the UK, like I said, next week.

I'm excited and nervous. Wish me luck!

Welcome to UKY.

You actually want to apply for a spousal visa, not a marriage visa, which generally refers to a visa you use to marry in the UK.  Since you are already married, you will want a spousal visa to be able to reside in the UK with your husband.

Oh that's what I meant. The spousal visa :) I do have my ducks in a row, just not my verbage.

We're moving to Worthing in West Sussex initially (living with the inlaws at first), and then hopefully on to Brighton :)

Lovely country. We're up the coast, near Rye in East Sussex (almost Kent). Haven't been to Brighton in ages, but it's lots of fun.

That's is completely untrue. A large number of people on this forum have married in the US and received spousal visas quickly and easily. Whoever told you that was incorrect.
Arrived as student 9/2003; Renewed student visa 9/2006; Applied for HSMP approval 1/2008; HSMP approved 3/2008; Tier 1 General FLR received 4/2008; FLR(M) Unmarried partner approved (in-person) 27/8/2009; ILR granted at in-person PEO appointment 1/8/2011; Applied for citizenship at Edinburgh NCS 31/10/2011; Citizenship approval received 4/2/2012

Yes, where you get married has no bearing on how quickly you receive a decision on your visa application. On which 'immigration website' did you read this?

I took my posts off here since whomever gave me my information and the website I read it on is obviously inaccurate according to those of you who know best. Thanks for setting me straight.  I'll be extremely cautious of anything I have to say on here in the future.

Oh, good heavens, no. Don't worry about it.

If I deleted every post where I'd gotten an immigration fact wrong, I'd have to come back to the Welcome Wagon and introduce myself all over again.

We get a lot of people on UK-Y who were given bad advice of one type or another and suffered for it, so we try to nip these things in the bud whenever they come up to avoid confusion and further problems for people. It was not intended as an attack on you, but on the sort of people who give the bad advice.

Okay. Well, apparently Immigration VISA Services -UK, which have been around for a while, gave me bad information.  I just spoke to my husband and he reminded me we also went to a solicitor here in the UK who specializes in immigration and he also told us the exact same information. So it's difficult when a lawyer gives you the same wrong information. They all told us it would be a faster process if we married in the UK.  Water under the bridge now.
