In Cambridge we have a website called Local Secrets which has offers and such:

There may be something similar for your locale.

As others have mentioned the store cards are a great start.  Each store will send you vouchers (and you'll get some printed in store on occasion) based on your purchases and your spending.  (Tesco, Sainsbury's, Co-operative Food...  Don't forget signing up for stores online mailings as they'll often send you evouchers good for money off online shops.)

If you have young childre, don't forget to sign up for the parenting segment of each store's offers as they're great for sending vouchers for baby essentials, as well as specific nappy and food manufacturers.  (See the freebies for parents thread in the Parenting section).

Good websites to check for grocery vouchers and other promotions are: Before I Shop
Super Savvy Me

(If you don't have a printer to print out the vouchers, you can opt to have them mailed to you instead.)   ;)

I discovered this site yesterday, which has some good coupons and links to get free samples.  I signed up for several. http://www.babycentre.co.uk/advertorials/beforeishop/

I have to second to sign up for moneysavingexpert.com.  If you liked couponing, this is the site for you for finding great deals.  Their weekly email newsletter is always full of great deals that other people scout out, and the forums are full of information.  The voucher thing can also be great.  I've got tons of stuff for free at Boots thanks to their loyalty card, and I don't use Boots all that often.

wow, great thread! thanks for all the informative replies.

I too am a couponer started about 4 months ago and already have a stockpile of non expiry items that should last us several years for about 1/4 of the retail price. Have not mastered the food part of couponing probably will have that master about the time we move to the UK and will have to start over, lol.

The other thing you get with store loyalty cards is special vouchers/coupons based on what you purchase.

Boots for example give you a £5 voucher for something almost every time you spend £5. Sainsburys give you either £X off a spend of a certain amount, or money off something they would like you to try based on your current purchase.

I have to say that when we lived in the US I never found that coupons were worth it. The generic item was always cheaper than the brand item minus the coupon (unless you were lucky and they accepted the coupons for the generic item - but I didn't seem to get lucky that often, so I gave up collecting them). Seemed like less effort just to buy generic.
