Medical/Dental Records?

When we move to the UK should we ask for copies of our family's medical/dental records to take with us to give to the new GPs/dentists, or do they contact our old doctor/dentists htemselves to request them after we register?

Are you asking if they'll contact your doctors in the US?  They definitely won't.  You can bring copies if you'd like.

I brought mine. I think my doctor glanced through them, but not with any enthusiasm.

My GP was glad to see my immunization records, but what they really wanted was records detailing my hearing loss. Unfortunatly, I don't have thse so I will have to go through diagnostic and exploratory tests all over again.

Bring them over. They may not be interested, but I think it is better to CYA just in case.

From my experience with two surgeries, the GPs were mainly interested in my immunization records.

However, I'm seeing a specialist now, and she's interested in EVERYTHING.

And as Cali Girl said, if you've been previously diagnosed with a specific condition, unless you have the medical records for it, you'll have to have the tests all over again in the UK.

They are just general notes/check-up history so probably won't be needed.

I just replied to this same topic in the thread called "stupid medical record question" which, by the way, is not a stupid question. My reply is fairly lengthy and I won't repeat it here, except to say at the very least you should take vaccination records.

Stoatula, when your doctor gave your record short shrift, did he/she keep a copy? If so, I would assume they were counting on the summariser to let them know later if there was anything significant in the record they should know about. Doctor appointments are usually quite short (10-15 minutes, I think 10 is mostly the norm) so they usually don't delve into paper records during the appointment unless there is a problem.

My doctor is capable of giving off palpable waves of indifference. Not a complaint, I find it kind of funny (my American doctor rather annoyed me by acting like he cared deeply).

Truth is, my medical history is boring. I have hypertension, but that's about it.

I'm bringing mine -- both medical and dental -- just to be on the safe side. My doctor (in US) recommended getting copies of all x-rays and mammograms as well. She recommends getting cancer screening every two years in my case (close family history) so this may help convince them of that.  [Although I do wonder if it will just make them bolshie about it]
