Full spectrum of marriage in the UK
« on: September 18, 2011, 01:02:21 PM »
I married a Brit in Denmead, Hampshire in 2004, and now I am divorcing the Brit in Surrey in 2011.

Anyone else stayed on following a divorce? I am a qualified Solicitor, so my life is pretty firmly grounded here now...its just weird that I suddenly have no family here, and my friends are dwindling as the inevitable divorce friend divorce begins...Though it looks like only ten percent have went with the Mr...

My mother stayed on after she divorced my dad, but she has us (well, me, my brother doesn't live in the UK any more) and has been here over 40 years!
Me: USC by parentage, UKC by birth
Hubby: UKC

I don't personally know anyone who has stayed on after a divorce, but I do know lots of people who have immigrated by themselves - got here on a student visa and stayed to work, or came here because their heritage allowed them a passport, etc. It may feel strange because your original motive to move here was marriage, but plenty of people move overseas for the thrill or the experience. Since your life is here now, it's certainly understandable.

Those visas practically don't exist any more though.

I divorced two years ago (after 8 years of living in the UK married to a british man) and have no intention of ever leaving here.  My career's great, I have a fantastic new partner, we live in a lovely little market town and I have wonderful friends who have become my 'UK family'.  My life is far better here than it could ever have been if I'd returned to the US after my divorce!
