American Food NOW poll
« on: September 09, 2004, 11:29:51 AM »
The biggest gripe I have is that the UK doesn't have the same diversity in it's food choices available when you go out to eat.  There's a surplus of take aways and pizzas and a McD's in every town city and village across the UK... you can visit a 20 pubs in a 20 mile radius and still have the same choices on the menu - and it's always 'this and that' foods: fish and chips, bubble and squeek, bangers and mash... yawn.

My kingdom for a TACO BELL...

I've even had the occassional Taco Bell dream... yup.  I know. Sad.  In my dream I'm walking along somewhere like London and stop some locals to ask for directions they say "yeah, just go up there past the Taco Bell and turn right" -- I immediately stopped in my tracks "WHAT! you have a Taco Bell here!"  - I ran in that slow-motion dream running state like I was running into the arms of my long lost lover..... ahhh.  Then I woke up.

Take care,

B

I used to miss catfish - but then I discovered skate and don't seem to miss it so much anymore...

Togos!
Their #9 (Pastrami on white bread, with provolone, sauerkraut, and a bit of mustard).
Haven't found any decent pastrami here in Kent. The type they have at ASDA and Safeway is a joke.

Have you seen the tinned hotdogs? :o

I do have some Martha White hush puppy mix up in my cupboard.  I'll get around to making it one of these days.  ;)

I like the pastrami from Sainsburys.  But from other threads I've realised that I'm probably not as picky as some...

http://www.delirosslyn.co.uk/B3_usa/B3_usaMainFrame.htm

they can get anything you want from the US and deliver it to your door (hmmn, prob not the Wendys or Taco Bell tho!)

It's all about the snob-factor, Peedal - you must try harder! e.g. the tastiest item in the Olive Garden is the toothpicks. If I need to eat one rung up from fast food, give me Garfunkels any day.

I hear ya, Sunmaid.
I have deduced & concluded that most pub food is frozen and heated up in the microwave.
Their burgers are quite un-tasty.
I now avoid eating at any local pubs.

However, if you go into East Sussex you can find some rather classy pubs (eg. The Royal Oak) which serve delicious un-fast foods & "puddings".

Don't get me started on those fat "chips" with everything... ;)

I'm so glad I have you around to show me the way, all-knowing and wonderful Nibbles!

Gotta spend some more at Sainsburys so we can do the Garfunkels thing again soon!  ;)

Mr Toke you are going to the wrong pubs! I know some do just serve up microwave crap but there are loads near us that have proper chefs and do proper home cooked food and I know it is a long way from where you are but there is a pub over in Swiss Cottage ("The Adelaide") that has a fantastic Thai barbecue in a lovely courtyard setting.  There must be one or two decent ones near you somewhere ...

I've only been here a little over 1 month, but the only thing i've missed is grape jelly and real peanut butter (like Skippy or Peter Pan or something).   I make PB&J all the time, and the closest thing I've found to grape jelly is something called "bramble jelly" or something and the peanut butter is awful.  When I asked someone about PB&J, they had never heard of it and couldn't believe that you would put peanut butter and jelly in the same sandwich.

I like the peanut butter I get from Sainsburys - as do my 2 American-born sons.  And for "grape jelly" I use Damson Jam.  My kids like it just as much.

Mr Toke - tried The Frog & Toad pub in Gillingham?  They do beer festivals about 4 times a year and have great cook-outs.

Or the Robin Hood pub over by Blue Bell Hill?

You can get Skippy peanut butter at Sainsburys.  Grape jelly can be found, but it's not cheap and you'd have to order it online or find it in a specialty shop like Partridges in London.
