PBS coming to the UK

PBS, known as the American television outlet for many British programs produced by the BBC and others, is looking to turn the tables by starting a digital channel in Britain.

The channel, which would be distributed via cable and satellite, would show both older and current PBS programs for which it is able to secure the rights. PBS officials declined to discuss specific shows, or the details of where the channel would be available, saying that plans were not final.

It looks like we have a date of 1 November for Sky.  I am not sure when the other platforms are launching it.

Hooray!  I hope they air all the Ken Burns specials.  We missed one episode of The National Parks and I would love to watch it again.

We were in Acadia and we got to watch the other episodes in the cinema in Bar Harbor.  It was awesome.

It looks like it won't be on Freeview.  Just seeing that it is coming to Virgin and Sky ATM.

I noticed on my Sky planner, near Sky Arts theres a channel called 'Rosa' but its airing Masterpiece Theatre and couple of other random programs but super late at night (around 1am or so) I wonder if this is where PBS UK will sit?

Yeah, it's meant to be there.  I actually found out about PBS UK by looking up wtf was up with Rosa.  It's on about 2 hours a day in the early morning.

Does it mean they'll broadcast all the pledge drives? Seems like every other month is a pledge drive when they show the crappiest shows you can imagine: old has-been singers from a million years ago, endless Irish tenors/sopranos/priests/whatever, boring writers flogging their latest book on yoga, how to be rich, how to avoid heart disease, etc. etc. All interspersed with local presenters beating you over the head about what you can get if you send a donation -- mostly DVDs of all of the above. If they would just stop the pledge drives, I would be more inclined to send them money!!

It used to be commercial-free but they're sneaking more and more of 'em in there.  >:(

My favorite PBS show is "Greater Boston" with Emily Rooney (Andy's daughter, btw). The Nature programs are OK if you want to watch animals eating animals (Maxwell's favorite is the hummingbird one they have on nearly every week)
