If you want to play US DVDs in the UK, just get a UK DVD player that will allow you to unlock the region, opening it up to play any region.  If you search the forums, there are a few posts about how to find one and how to unlock it.  Depending on the make/model, it can be as easy as entering a code on the remote.

This. There are players at Argos that are unlockable for about 20 odd quid. Almost all my DVDs are region one and it's been a lifesaver!

To everyone about the Dvd's. Yes they do work on PS3's which is the games console I have and I've told her this before... I have also asked her to bring a DVD over when she came last time to be sure (which she didn't) but I have spoken with a friend who travels there and back alot of the time and this DVDs work fine
the up's and downs are all part of it but that smile she gives me makes my whole world go around

There is no problem using a multi-region DVD player--it's perfectly legal and easy.  In fact, most computers come set automatically to multi-region now instead of one region, so you can watch any DVD on your computer.  I brought all my DVD's over here and have had no problem watching them.

Most, but not all of our US dvds work on the UK xbox 360. But, like others are saying, a region free dvd player or codes to unlock a dvd player are easy to come by.

I guess another way to do it is to burn them to a portable harddrive using a program that removes the region code then just plug it into the front of your 360. Might save on dvd shipping costs too....

As some say: these are just things. Moving to a different continent is hard and I wouldn't recommend dragging too many things with you. Take just few things that you like and would like to have around.
I moved a few times and can assure you, than after some time you realise that you can live withouth things that seemed necessary before. You can always buy new furniture, especially http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/ [nofollow] has some good and cheap stuff. Good luck.

Yes, this is how I watch my UK dvds here in the US. Just find a DVD player you might want to buy, google it (or use the search engine of your choice ;)) for "region free code" + the brand/model of the DVD player. I got mine at Wally World for cheap and set the code in immediately. :)

And I can so relate to this topic. I've just moved out of a 2 BR apt that I was in all by myself for 10 years. I had to give/trash/sell SO much. And I still have tons more in my parent's garage/house! I'm still trying to sell a few big pieces like the sofa and bookshelves. I hate to do it, but they ARE replaceable. Esp the couch since it's from ikea. ;D I organized all my sentimental stuff as I moved into boxes to leave at my parents once I move and then some to take with. In the meantime, I'm living with them and can't find anything! It's frustrating and I realize how much I *do* use every day. It's a good "test" for knowing exactly what WILL come for sure. I already miss a couple of things I gave to Goodwill, though.  :\\\'(

I bought a dual (or maybe multi) region dvd player when I was still in the States.  It costs about $80.  I collected several UK dvd's before coming over here and it just made sense.

The dvd player made it over here just fine and there are no voltage problems.  I should add that the dvd player has a continental Europe plug and I had to use an adapter to use it in the US as well as here.

I also brought my Wii with me.  Not sure if this is a concern or not.  When we plugged it in with an adapter the fuse blew and all the lights went out in the room!  I was nervous that the Wii had died with the fuse box.  However I bought a new plug cord thing and it works fine.  I'm now back to my Just Dance obsessed ways.

I got mine for around £20 in the UK at Currys.  These are pretty cheap in the UK as well.

I moved over and had a small amount of furniture, dishes, clothing, etc, and if I were to do it again, I wouldn't bring anything except sentimental items that couldn't be replaced. Most things will be cheaper to sell and replace than move. You'll also be waiting months for the items to be delivered if you do a shipment by sea. My items were packed up in the US in late May and I didn't receive them until late October. I'd recommend doing a small shipment with items you can't replace, but leave the furniture behind.

Don't bring any electrical items that operate on a motor, like a blender or vacuum, because they won't work. Things like laptops and TVs will work, though.

As everyone else has mentioned, homes are much smaller in the UK and you may struggle to fit an entire bedroom set into a UK home. My master bedroom, which is considered "spacious" in the UK, is only about 8 feet by 11 feet, and I have an Ikea super king in it, so there's absolutely no room for anything but the bed and a dresser. Non-master bedrooms in UK homes are much smaller and often have room for nothing more than a double bed. Some homes we looked at wouldn't even fit our bed in the master bedroom.

We packed out container on June 14th and it arrived in Liverpool <2 weeks later, cleared customs with no hassles, and was being unloaded at our house in the UK in under 2 weeks. Shipping part loads might take longer, but if a company takes 'months' then something is wrong. We shipped a 40 foot container door-to-door for just over $4K. We loaded and unloaded, but have a lot of experience doing that, so no problem.

It's personal. If you like your stuff, look at the cost of a 20 foot container. Get multiple quotes. It could be as cheap as shipping a lot of smaller personal items.
