Ooooh- guess what I found?!?
« on: September 27, 2011, 10:30:12 PM »
Since there seems to be a UK-Y baby boom (and fingers crossed it continues to those trying!) I thought I would start a thread about our best pregnancy/maternity/baby buys in order to help each other out.

Today I found some really cute maternity jeans (caveat being maternity, Seven for all Mankind they ain't) at New Look for £15.99.  I fit into my normal size, they're comfy and it will be nice to go out in something other than leggings for once.

Anyone else found any good deals lately?

I was quite surprised to find out that Jojo Maman Bebe was so affordable!  The dresses and sweaters are about £30 and the work trousers were about £40...You can get away with only 2 pairs or work trousers if you wear leggings and dresses other days!

Will have to check out those maternity jeans :)  The rubber band trick doesn't work on my jeans any more when I am sitting down!

Try the NCT Nearly New Sales. They have them a few times a year. Find out your local NCT group and get on their mailing list. Great buys - very good condition mat clothes and newborn baby stuff. They only allow people to sell things that are in good condition.

Also H&M mamma range. (at least it was called mamma when I was pregnant). Great mat clothes especially for work.

Looks like Dorothy Perkins is having a good sale on maternity clothes, they have some t-shirts and things on clearance for £3!  :o I'm holding off on buying anything just yet as I have a couple of pairs of trousers and jeans in a bigger size and have been wearing those lately, plus I have a lot of loose tops that will work for a while.  :)

Anyone buying stuff for baby as they go along? As per DH's suggestion (he has one already) we have been buying wipes (sensitive skin kind just in case baby needs those), nappy bags, baby oil and baby bath and other small items when they are on sale. We have a small little pile developing.  ;) I'm holding off on buying the really fun stuff until closer to the time.

Good idea!  I have only bought one fun thing for baby, as it's pretty slim pickings out there if you don't know the sex.  We'll start looking for offers for baby essentials!

Asda's Little Angels brand is not only cheap as chips but I think great quality.  Diapers didn't leak nearly as much as the "name brand" stuff did, and did I mention they are cheap? ;)  I can get 4-5 packs of wipes for like 3 quid!

I lucked out on this pregnancy and my SIL donated her maternity clothes to me.  She has Jomama brand maternity pants that are super comfy! Next has really cute maternity stuff as well, I like their dresses and tunics and the prices are pretty fair.

Five hundred million of us!" "Do you have a flag …? "What? We don't need a flag, this is our home, you bastards" "No flag, No Country, You can't have one! Those are the rules... that I just made up!...and I'm backing it up with this gun, that was lent to me from the National Rifle Association."

I've only bought very few maternity clothes because my sister gave me a whole suitcase full when I was home last (including a down maternity jacket I'll definitely be needing soon!).  Even though we have great shopping in Maidstone I didn't find any maternity clothes at the big H&M or New Look.  My sis also gave me tons of unisex newborn clothes and I had the best luck with thrift shops when I was home - all the baby stuff was $1 and the maternity clothes were $3!  I found some really great stuff!  I've been looking in the charity shops here with a lot less luck.

Another good source is freecycle - you should sign up to your local email list if you haven't already.  So far I've gotten a gently used baby bottle steriliser (even though I plan to mostly breastfeed), a baby monitor, an unopened box of nursing pads and a large exercise/birthing ball to help my back.

Ebay is also great for all kinds of things.  We're using cloth diapers and wipes and you can find great bargains from people who gave up on them quickly or whose lo didn't take to a certain brand or even people who bought too many!

What about Preloved?  I've looked at a few things on there and they seem ok.  I've got Freecycle and can definitely recommend them!  We've gotten non-baby stuff from there that has been great.

NCT nearly new sales and Baybee nearly new sales-we got a Quinny stroller with all the extras AND a Maxi Cosi car seat with base at one in Harrogate for only 250 GBP!  Definitely check those out!

I was also going to suggest H&M's maternity line, they're affordable, stylish and love their designs! ;)

I just checked Gumtree and found LOADS of stuff in our area that is nearly new or gently used for cheap. Awesome. I really won't mind not spending £500 on a brand new travel system if I can get a gently used one for £100 (as long as it's safe and clean) and put the other £400 towards our trip to the states to show off the bambino.  ;) I'm told the only thing you shouldn't buy used is a cot mattress, so I'll be getting a new one of those and new linens for the bed, but I hope to buy quite a few other things used. Better for the environment anyway (you know, I have to say that so I don't just look totally cheap.  :P) Baby stuff is expensive and they sure grow up fast!

Check out http://www.netmums.com/

They have local listings with nearly new stuff and we just got a cot that is regularly £180 for £60!  I absolutely love getting deals :)

Bought a maternity top and some jeans from H & M and I have to say-cute AND affordable-not the horrible mom jeans I got from JoJo Maman Bebe.  Will definitely be returning those!

Hope everyone is well in this chilly weather :) xx

I can't say enough great things about NCT sales and Freecycle (and that's not just because I'm on the Nearly New Sale committee).

Thanks for the tip on the Nearly New Sales girls!  We went to one today and got a cute Baby Bjorn chair bouncer for £15!  I think we'll go to the one in the spring to get more clothes as we'll obviously know whether lo is a boy or girl by then : )
