This thread is so very true. Most people I know know that my boyfriend is from England, but many just assume he's from London. I.e. other person: "Looking forward to moving to London?" "I bet London is so neat!"... Me: "Actually, he's from a small town about an hour outside Birmingham." Other person: Awkward silence "Oh, okay."
Though, I've gotten to the point where I'm over it and I don't even correct people anymore, lol.

I know this is dragging up an old topic but I just stumbled across it and have been getting irked about the same issue! My mom and a few other family members/close friends have been asking about when my DF is arriving for our wedding from LONDON and when I'll be moving back over to LONDON, etc. etc.! He isn't far from London in the grand scheme of things but sometimes it is sooo irritating to hear them say London instead of just England. I've learned to just ignore it but I cringe inside every time at the generalization hah.
My, how time flies....

And you're going to confuse them still further by moving to a Reading that is nowhere near Wakefield!

Different lyrics to the same song time. Since moving back the US nearly a year ago, I have had quite a few people ask me how I liked living in Europe, or mentioning that last they heard I was living in Europe, etc. While I get the whole Europe thing, I would think UK or Great Britain or something a bit less generic than Europe.

An acquaintance of mine refers to it as Europe. He's like "so are you excited about living in Europe?" I'm like "Yes! I'm THRILLED to live in the UK."

On another angle, I thought maybe Londoners think that London is all there is?  :P  :)

Quote from: Guardian Article
For me, the country is one generic place. It means not-London, yet at least it has its own character: grass, disgusting smells, cows. But the not‑London that is Manchester, Bristol, Piddle-upon-Nowhere – what's the point?

Hahaha!  While I was living in London, the extent of my geographic knowledge heading northward went like this: London > M25 > big blank area > Scotland.

Now that I live a bit north of London, it goes London > M25 > Cambridge > big blank area > Scotland

  ;)

That's pretty much exactly how I feel, except from I also include anywhere outside of zone 3 in that. I refer to going to Hampstead heath as going "up north"

Basically a map of include would be M25, SOUTH, NORTH and HERE BE MONSTERS.

And so, dear readers, North Americans really think just like Londoners.  :P

Be thankful your area is a

This past weekend I met a girl who just married her British sweetie (who lives in Australia; they plan on settling in Los Angeles). We were all chatting about the last time I was in London and what I got up to and she said:

Her: "We are going to his best friend's wedding in London next weekend!"
Me: "Oh how lovely! Where is it being held?"
Her: "The Lake District!"

I decided not to correct her as she'll learn... she'll learn.

hahaha TOUCHE! When he was here we went to Starbucks in Reading, MA as it's literally 2 minutes away and he was like What? Where are we?! and then when I was posting from there on Facebook other people asked if I was back from my trip yet because it said on my status that I was in Reading hahaha
