Pumpkin Puree Thread 2011
« on: September 30, 2011, 05:16:36 PM »
Anyone seen any tins of pumpkin puree this year? (Libby's or whatever...) Just wanted to possibly narrow down my search. I normally make my own pumpkin puree, but you know, this pregnancy thing is making me too lazy for that this year.  :P I really need to make pumpkin cupcakes with cinnamon cream cheese icing sometime this month, plus loads of other yummy stuff.  :D

I've been looking too. Around this time of year I tend to want all things pumpkin, from pancakes to pie to lattes to Blizzards... etc. That is one of the things I really miss about the States. I went from having it readily available to none in sight. It doesn't help everyone back home is posting about all the pumpkin treats coming available now.  ::)

I keep looking at pumpkins in Morrisons and they are tiny little things for more than I wish to pay. I am sure it will be the same everywhere. A friend told me I could have a chunk off one from her garden but it will be a couple to a few weeks yet before that happens. Guess I will have to be patient and keep searching.

I've looked in the Waitrose in Hove and in Lewes and no luck on the pumpkin front.  Boo!  I'm hoping it will appear soon.

Just yesterday, someone asked me if I had a recipe for pumpkin pie. I told him I don't bake, but can ask my Mom/Sister.  He then asked what kind of pumpkin you use. I replied "It comes in a can."  He didn't believe me. So I'm hoping I can find some here for his sake!

It is stocked year-round at our local health food/vegetarian shop, if you have one in your area it may be worth popping in :)

I had heard that tinned pumpkin was going to be tough to find this year, due to the hurricane that came through the east coast in the US, but I have also heard reports that the crops have been great. My mom has had amazing pumpkins this year.

I meant to pick up a tin or two when I was in the US in August and of course, I forgot. ::) So I'll just have to make my own. Uggh. Lol.

Same here, but in June/July when we were there. I will definitely do it next year to save all this hassle of hunting and the price of pumpkins at the shops.

Selfridges at the Bullring in Birmigham (for those of you in the midlands) had a ton of the Libby's cans piled up in a pyramid near the American section

Partridges carries them as well.  You can even order it online.

I just got Riverford's squash box which includes a couple of pumpkins, so I am going to be busy soon enough roasting and freezing them.  I do want to buy loads of canned pumpkin this year.  I always check our nearest Waitrose, but they rarely have it even in the autumn.  Which is weird since I almost always here an American or Canadian accent or two when I am in the area.

OK, stupid question, but are pumpkin puree and canned pumpkin the same thing?  Is the puree what you use in pie?  I bought a couple of (rather pricey) jars of organic pumpkin puree through our whole foods co-op, and it just looks a little soupy, so I wasn't sure if it was right.
