Flu vaccine for kids
« on: October 07, 2011, 09:56:11 PM »
So, our first winter here. What's the general feeling on flu vaccines for kids? In the states it's gung-ho, and we've done it every year for our now 3 y.o., making sure it's the non-mercury brands and dosing (per the Sears vaccine bk).
However, it seems here it's only given to at risk kids? I was going to get one for myself at boots, but they don't give to under 16s. And I'm not stressed about it, just not sure if there are options available? Or people just don't worry about it here?
FYI We've registered with a surgery, but have yet to actually deal with them for much (knock on wood), so I'm partially just ignorant on how the system works.
Also, in the states we've been following an alternate vaccine schedule, which of course here still means we're over vaccinated ;)

Thanks for your opinions!

When I've gone to our local surgery annually for my flu vaccine I hardly see any children.  It's probably because they prioritise the flu vaccine (at risk demographs) instead of making it a free for all.  I'm on our surgery's list because of my asthma, and they only send letters out to certain people.  You may want to speak to a GP at your local practice if you'd like your children to be considered for the flu jab.  They'd be able to go over your options better with you, and possibly explain why you were turned away from Boots...

The attitude to it is totally different if I recall correctly. Here it is gung-ho. They do mass vaccinating (mist version) at all the local schools. Pregnant women also are practically frog-marched into the office to get it. But I remember when I was pregnant in the UK my mid-wife was HORRIFIED I was even considering the flu jab.

I *think* though that the no jab for pregnant women 'rule' has just been reversed there?
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Yes, they're recommending it for pregnant women here now that they have it as a combined jab: flu & bird flu.  Pregnant women now fall within the "at risk" demograph.  Although, I did ask after it's safety as I had the jabs during both my pregnancies (in 2007 & 2009) and they did allow me to have it.

I had it when I was pregnant, but I personally wouldn't have it again or give it to my kids unless they were at risk. I am good with the basic vaccinations, but don't think that all of them are necessary for little kids. But if you want to have them, be my guest.
