London on a budget?
« on: October 09, 2011, 09:52:35 PM »
DF and I are getting married at the end of the month. It's just a laid back affair, about 25 guests, as it is not a first marriage for either of us.

We would like to go away for a few days afterward, perhaps to London. Trouble is, we are short on funds after the visa, moving costs and wedding.

Is there anyway to visit London on a budget? We found some good prices for train tickets from West Yorkshire, but have no idea where to stay.

Trouble is, we like spacious rooms, nice ammenities with modern conveniences, and they don't seem to come cheap in the London area. In fact, from our initial research, they seem to be extremely expensive.  Some we found within our price range were very business like hotels - functional but not very pretty.

Does anyone know of a really nice hotel that doesn't cost an arm and a leg?  We would start our stay on a Sunday, so we won't have to pay weekend rates.  We would like to stay close to the usual touristy area.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

PickledSakura - We've tried many sites, but I was looking for more personal recommendations.

Geeta - Less than £130 per night (nice if that included breakfast).  We thought we found a place last night. It was beautiful, centrally located, within our price range, but then I read the reviews and many people said the rooms are lovely but teeny tiny. I am extremely claustrophobic, so that wouldn't work for me.

I seriously recommend thomas cook - you can get your rail and hotel for a decent price.

Unfortunately, the rooms in London high end hotels can be on the small side as well.  I know that doesn't help you but just wanted to let you know that no matter what your budget, a large room in London can be hard to find.

Yes, remember that London is like any other major tourist/commerce hub. Large, nice hotel rooms near the tourist center are going to cost a fortune.

I am not in London' but i might say if your stay was a honeymoon one, I'd stay a bit further out since you're more likely to be staying in. you can find a lovely room, cheaper rate and hop on the train in...
We are all each a little bit crazy, a little bit different and a little bit the same.

Thank you for all your suggestions. It's a tough one, as I've never been to London and don't know the area, and my DF has only been there once  :o in all his 50 years.

We have a Thomas Cook in our town center, so I think we'll wander over there this afternoon and see what they offer.

Thank you all again.

We got an amazing room at the Paddington Hotel for about £50 in January. They have 2 buildinsg, one that has suites and the other I believe is just rooms. We got a room in the building with suites, so I have no idea what the other building is like.

The hotel is not  far from Hyde Park. I think we booked through laterooms.com

Might be worth checking out. I would definitely stay there

Oh right, sorry. I wasn't sure of your budget, since £130/night is more than I can usually afford :)

Anywho, we once stayed at the Hilton in Islington, and got it for something around £50/night when we booked it through Hotwire.com. The room was quite spacious for London, and only slightly smaller than what you'd get in the US.   The only catch was that we didn't know the name of the hotel until after we booked.  I'm not sure if you want to be trusting that for your honeymoon, though!

I checked last night on hotels.com and there were quite a number of rooms at your rate if you book now and according to reviews I read, I am sure many would fit what you are looking for! They're are enough traveler reviews on there to get the gist if the place is worth your time.
