Looking for pantyhose
« on: October 10, 2011, 11:45:11 AM »
Where does one buy pantyhose in England?  I saw a very small selection in Bodycare. I need plus size pantyhose, to be specific. Anyone know where they have a big selection of hosiery?

Kerri, we only have a M&S food store locally, so I went to their website. The largest I saw was an X-Large. I am probably a 22/24UK as well. Can you tell me what size you buy (you can PM me if you'd like)?

I usually pick up the XL in the Ladder Resistant pantyhose/tights/stockings... For me, they fit a lot like L'eggs used to.. Bit tight at the the thigh, but not uncomfortable. Found they stretch out after a wash or two. M&S have one style that goes to XXL and thats the Ultimate Magic style. Hope this is of some help!

Thank you all for your help.

Kerri, I think I'm going to order the M&S ones you recommended. I just want to make sure "tights" mean pantyhose. They look like pantyhose in the photo, but to me, "tights" are the thicker, opaque ones that women wear with casual skirts/dresses.  I am a bit confused by the "denier" gauge as well. I guess the smaller the denier number, the more sheer the hose is. Maybe I will order one in the 10 denier and one in the 15 denier (actually I found 3 in the XXL. I'd rather have them a bit big if possible).

Thank you again so much!

In the UK, there is generally no distinction between tights and pantyhose - if they are all-in-one and go from the waist to the feet, they are called tights :P.

Yes, you're right about the denier... the way I think of it is that the lower the denier number, the more likely they are to ladder :P. 10 denier are pretty thin and flimsy and can ladder really easily, whereas 40 denier are thicker and hardly ladder at all.

Using black tights to illustrate the difference:

Glad I could be of help. I hope when they arrive, they fit nicely!

BTW Ive used Evans pantyhose and thought they were overpriced for what they were (I dont think I got my foot fully through and a hole developed, while I didnt have that issue with M&S) I found M&S prices to be similar to JC Pennys and the like (thats where I used to get my hose from back in the US) or L'Eggs

My mother is British and I still get confused, though - like her - use the overall meaning of 'tights' for everything.

Ksand and Kerri,

Thanks again for the info. I picked up a pair at a different M&S today. Haven't tried them on yet, but if they fit okay, I will order more from the website. (They only had the ones I needed in black in the store, so I will get the tan from the website.)

I'm only getting these suckers for my wedding. I used to wear pantyhose every day of my life. When I moved to the South USA, I never put them on again. It's been about 14 years since I've worn them. :D

Thanks again. You all saved me much running around (and probably lots of ££) !

I really, really, really miss my L'Eggs pantyhose/tights and have been experimenting and have found - for me - the cheap Tesco tights (which also come in X-Large) have been working out brilliantly. They come in a box of 5 (or 6). Sorry, I don't have the box so I can't tell you what they are called, but I'm very happy with them and I wear tights almost every day to work. I'm an EA in the Principal's office of a university.

Thanks Denise. :)

I did order the M&S tights, after trying on the pair I got at the local store. They fit perfectly and I am quite happy with them, but nice to know there is another option, as the M&S tights aren't cheap!
