Let's talk about cat litter
« on: October 16, 2011, 04:18:55 PM »
Ok, this is not the nicest of topics, but I'm at a loss for which cat litter to use. In the US, we always used Fresh Step clumping litter (for multi-cat households). Everything I seem to find here is some kind of non-clumping clay litter. And it requires you to completely empty out the tray at least once or twice a week; as opposed to my being able to scoop out the clumps, top up the box, and only completely empty the box maybe once a month. Also, the type my husband bought, Ultra White, sticks to our cats paws like crazy and its tracking all over the flat.

Any suggestions for anything similar to what we're used to?

I use Sainsbury's Ultra Clumping and I find that it's the closest to what I was using in the US (also, score! i can get it when I do my weekly shop).

It clumps well - although I would still recommend changing it entirely at least every other week.

I use Catsan Hygeine......the one I use is non clumping but they do sell a clumping kind.  I used the clay litter when we first got the cats but found we were changing the litterbox completely 2 to 3 times a week due to the smell but after getting the Catsan, no more smell at all and only completely change the litter box about once a month unless it gets really bad then more often.  My DH has the litterbox duty as that is about the only thing he can help me with due to his MS...but he don't mind and says it is his job due my  allergies!!!!  I love my DH so much!!!!!!

This litter is a little more expensive than the clay but hey you get what you pay for....and when you come into my house you can't even tell I have cats until you see them!!!!!

This is good to know. I'm shipping some litter (it is lightweight clumping) as all the changes and trip will be traumatic enough, and then I can blend with the new stuff and make the change gradually. We shovel out every day and can't get it totally cleaned out more than every 2 weeks and most of the time you can't smell the urine.

We were Fresh Step Clumping people, too!  We use Catsan Ultra Clumping litter here.  It seems expensive and comes in little 5kg bags.  I miss the giant 40lb tubs of Fresh Step in a big way.  But the cats took to it right away, so we've never switched.  I've heard that Costco has an excellent clumping litter, but we don't drive, so it's just too much of a PITA to even consider.

We notice no odors and it's less "dusty" than Fresh Step.  The granules are larger and  are pretty well controlled with a litter mat.

We definitely don't do full box dumps frequently -- we scoop at least once daily, usually twice, and that keeps the box nice and fresh.

Definitely recommend.

I use this: http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/cats/cat_litter/clumping_litter/classy_cat/14037

Delivered to the door, two bags lasts me about three months or so (I have two cats and scoop daily) - it is the best clumping, yet soft, litter I've ever used.

this topic is more important than any non-cat person would realize. We used the Sam's Club clumping litter, and wish we had brought several containers...not just the part filled one that was thrown on the container at the last minute.

Up to now for convenience and price we have used the Aldi brand at £1.79 for 10kg; it's fine if you have to be on a budget, but definitely not the same quality as the litter we were getting.

Thankfully our 14 year old moggie isn't particular; but if we still had our boys (both cancer victims prior to the move back), it would be a real problem.

Thanks for starting this thread!

After trials with many different cat litters, and discovering my cat hates certain litters and would refuse to go in the thing :o, we use Catsan clumping litter. It's quite fine so doesn't hurt my cat's feet as much (yes this seemed to be a problem... ::)) and it is also pretty low on odour. But, as someone else has said, it can be pricey.. But I will look at that link evilshell posted!

Costco sells a clumping litter that many here swear by.  Not a lot of help if you don't have one near you or can't access it.  You might want to totally switch tactics and go for the crystal stuff (not sure how well it works).  You're just meant to scoop the poo and empty every couple of weeks or something like that.

I've come to realise that cats' pee and poo react differently to different types of litter than other cats.  I think it's really difficult to go by what other people's experiences are with litter, at least when it comes to smell performance.  In the States, my cat used a non-clumping litter, and it worked well with his chemistry, but other owners panned it (with others saying it was the best stuff ever).  Of course, it wasn't sold here, so I went for the pine stuff.  It's a bit of a PITA even though, and I wouldn't suggest it for someone who wants to avoid 2-3 X a week litter changes, but for my cat, it takes care of any odours.  I only wish my cat could use clumping, but he has UT problems so we avoid it.

We buy flushable stuff. It's expensive but DH refuses to buy anything else and I'm not sure how our cats would react if we switched it on them. They do like to play in it and we often find dusty paw prints, but it's worth it for the flushable factor.

Wish we had tried this with Maxwell when he was young! He's always interested in the toilet anyway  :-[

I use a clumping, natural kind here in the US called the World's Best Cat Litter.  It's made of corn, so it's flushible and they also make a multi cat formula (I have 3).  Has anyone seen compariable kinds of litter in the UK so far?  I'm panicking as to what my kitties will use when we move in August.  I tried regular clumping litter here, and they dug half of it onto the floor.  They seem to like the "natural" stuff.  I had them on the pine pellets before this, but I needed a clumping formula.

Any suggestions would be great!

They sell that here! I've never used it, but I had a friend who did. I don't know if you can buy it in shops, but you can definitely get it online from various pet supplies places. You may even be able to find it at somewhere like Pets-at-Home (think Petco); I've never looked, so I'm not sure.
