Problem with opening a bank account
« on: October 17, 2011, 12:25:43 PM »
I went to the bank today to open a bank account but because I don't have proof of address, I can't open one.

Here's my situation...
> Living with mother in law, so I don't have council tax
> No phone bill or any other monthly bill send to me
> Not working = no proof of employment

I don't know what else to provide.
Help!
=)

This has been discussed in great detail in the "money matters" area of the forum.  Here is one recent topic: http://talk.uk-yankee.com/index.php?topic=67938.0

Have you registered with a GP? that will get you an "official" letter from the NHS. They may not take it, but worth a try. Also, even if you are not working you can get an NI number which will generate another bit of official mail.

Apply for a provisional driver's license.

Thanks for replying back to my post.
I finally opened a bank account!
Though NHS letter wasn't accepted, I also didn't have a driver id.
I was lucky with this one bank that accepted my passport.

Had the same issue but went to HSBC and opened the Passport account with them.  The charge a monthly fee - 8 quid - but it is the only bank that allows to open an account without requiring the two proofs of address (residence).
