Can you post candy to the US through the Royal Mail?
« on: October 18, 2011, 09:20:47 PM »
I want to send my Dad some Pontefract cakes for his birthday, as he loves licorice. Is this a problem (shipping food to the USA)?  Can I put "candy" on the customs slip?

Thank you!

Should be fine, as far as I know - my parents and friends sent me candy using Royal Mail a few times when I lived in the US: a chocolate advent calender for Christmas, Creme Eggs for Easter etc. They sent it via ground shipping though (because it was cheaper than airmail), so it took about 6 weeks to arrive!

I send chocolate all the time, as my SIL loves Cadbury's.  I haven't had a problem yet!  (Passports to the DVLA...that is an entirely different matter! :P)

I don't think you should mark it as chocolate, are you nuts? People will kill for chocolate and think of the people who will see that! ;D

I always put "Gift, no commercial value"

We get 'sweets' (today it was chocolate buttons, flakes, galaxy dark, bourbon & custard creme's) from our friends in Nottingham all the time. Never had any issues.

Depending on how picky your post office is, you might not be able to just say 'Gift.' A lot of post offices require something more specific these days. I send chocolate all the time (and write "chocolate" on the customs form) and have never had a problem.

As far as I'm aware everything is okay except for Kinder Eggs, which are illegal in the US... not that that stops my friends for asking from them all the time :P

Thanks all!

Yes, my post office is rather picky. I sent a card that had a bookmark attached to the card and the lady felt all over the card and wanted to know what was in it. How she felt that super thin bookmark is beyond me. Her talents are being wasted at the post office. ;)

Thanks again, everyone.

I seem to recall that the US considers them to be a choking hazard and banned them. Seriously. No idea how a company as large as Walgreens gets away with selling them...

They only have stickers in the eggs in the US, or did at least.

I agree they only have stickers in the ones I have had ;) Don't see why it would be a chocking hazard if parents are keeping an eye on their kiddos. Just my opinion!
