Swiss chard recipes?
« on: October 19, 2011, 10:47:45 AM »
My veggie box came today, and I was supposed to get spinach, which I love and have a thousand uses for... But instead they sent me swiss chard? They didn't even write it on the order form! Must have been a mistake, because I have swiss chard on my dislike list. Got it in my box a few times, and didn't really enjoy anything I made with it.

So... Does anyone have any recipes that might make me like swiss chard? I am open to liking it, just haven't discovered a way I enjoy it yet!

Thanks in advance. :)

We loved this and it's very hearty for cold days. I'm sure you could de-veganise it by adding sausage if necessary.  ;D

Good luck. I know the feeling of opening the veg box and saying WTF?  ;D

BTW, did you ask for them to credit you? They should do if it's on your dislike list.

I just sent them an email to complain. :) Thanks for the advice and the recipe! Checking it out now.

I love swiss chard! Mmm- I usually use it as a swap for spinach and I've had loads and loads and loads of it in the allotment this year

Things I have done (that I can remember -I've had so much I can't remember, lol)
Used it as a spinach swap in curry recipes like Saag Paneer, Sarson Ka Saag, etc
Bacon and chard
Tossed in pasta with other sauces
Used in an omlette
Eaten straight up in a salad
Warmly Wilted with garlic
Warmly Wilted with lime juice
Warmly Wilted with Vinegarette
Chard and white bean stew
Sausage and chard casserole
Used in stir-fries - Thai, Chinese, etc

Hmm, probably more, but hope that's a good start!
 :)

Wow, definitely a good start. :) Glad to know I can just use it like spinach. I'll try it in a few different things this week. Thanks PB!

Pb's suggestions are great!  You can  hide anything by chopping it up small and tossing it into soup or stew of any flavour / variety!

I agree with Phatbeetle, it's an easy spinach swap.

When I lived in Kenya, the neighbouring mama used to buy me swiss chard and call it spinach. I never actually saw real spinach in my village but the tender chard was a delightful change from the everyday hearty kale.

The stalks are good to chop up and mix in whatever you are cooking.

Green smoothies! Throw it in a blender with some milk, water and/or juice, frozen fruit and maybe some sweetener if you think you need it. You don't taste the chard at all, I promise.

Thanks so much for your suggestions everyone! I used it instead of spinach in my veggie enchiladas last night, and they were surprisingly tasty. Maybe it will even come off of my dislike list. :)

My go to chard recipe is the following:

Add chopped garlic and onions to olive oil on a sauce pan, season, and then when the onions are translucent add the chopped chard to it with a little bit of water to help steam it. Mix well in the pan. It'll cook up in 20 seconds or so. Really quick and easy side dish.

I very much dislike mushy chard. I like my greens to still have some crutch to them if possible. I do the same recipe with kale, mustard greens, and any other strange green that I don't know what to do with!

In an effort to use what I have in the house, I'm going to try this: http://blog.sigsiv.com/2010/09/kidney-beans-and-chard-in-coconut-milk.html

It seems to be for South Beach Diet people, but hey, I'm flexible if it means not having to leave the flat.  ;D

oh poor swiss chard!! It is so lovely on it's own. I hope people don't confuse it with kale. That can take some stomaching of you aren't used to it. Roasted kale chips are fab though!

You're right Olive! It was much yummier than I expected.

One thing though. The chard with the red stalks stained the coconut milk pink overnight so the leftovers made for a rather psychedelic lunch.  ;D
