Aloe vera
« on: October 19, 2011, 06:58:50 PM »
What do I do with it?!?!?

A friend gave me a tiny little stalk/leaf of it in a pot earlier this year. She said, "It probably won't take, but water it  now and then and see what happens." Now, six months or so later, it's like something out of Little Shop of Horrors! It's massive! I have it in the same pot on my kitchen windowsill, but I can clearly see that it's going to need re-potting very soon.

I know aloe is good for burns, but I can't see myself needing burn relief more than once every few years.

Will it just keep getting bigger and bigger and bigger?? Can I put it outside? If I put it in a much bigger pot, it won't even fit on the sill anymore.

WHAT DO I DO WITH IT?!?!?!?

I think it might get to cold here for it to be outside.

It's good for sunburns too!  :)  (also can be used for rashes & cuts, and as a moisturiser too)

Being warmer where you are, you could try putting it outside (it's frost sensitive), but I'd be more concerned about its getting too wet without shelter - which would be a problem for a succulent (it might drown!).

Other than that, I can't tell you.

On this link - it tells you how to divide it:

How about aloe vera for everyone for Christmas?  :)

The only other use I've heard of besides skin stuff is that the juice can be used for *ahem* "moving along" certain digestive issues, though you need to be careful with how much you would take and I'm not sure what the concentration should be. Also, it apparently tastes pretty foul.

As for suggestions, I agree with Mrs R, perhaps snip off a bit of it and bestow it upon other unsuspecting victims??  ;)  ;D

It's really good for dry skin, try rubbing some on your legs this winter if they get a bit dry. Agree that you should just pass off some clippings onto other people. I'd love to have an aloe vera plant, too bad I'm so far away!  ;)

Jewlz, if you were closer I'd just give you the whole damned thing! I don't think I know anyone who wants any of it ... and I actually didn't want it in the first place!  :P

Meeeee! I'd love a piece. Funnily enough you are the second person I heard today talk about giving away their wild aloe vera plant. My other friend lives in WI so that was out.  ;)

I have the same issue with a spiky plant a friend gave me. It populates like crazy. I think everyone in my office is going to get a desk plant for Christmas.

Use it for insect bite and stings, irritation from nettle stings etc. It has amazing healing properties! As for taking it internally I wouldn't use the wild plant until you find out how much. We have a product here called aloe juice that people drink to get you moving. I live in Arizona and they grow great here and Native peoples have used it for centuries.

I am well overdue for another visit to Cornwall! It is amazing how I used to travel all over Europe for the weekend but the thought to go across England for the same amount of time is unbearable!  :P
