UK: Rioters came from 44 countries - Daily Mail logic
« on: October 24, 2011, 07:57:05 AM »
I am bewildered by this. Why does foreign nationality indicate greed and opportunist criminality?

I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

And the people who note that the remaining 6 of 7 jailed must be British, get red-arrowed. ???

And one comment started ranting about illegal immigrants....where did it say in the article that the foreign people were here illegally?

I love the DM for their gossip stories, but I also hate them for the way they always tend to write about immigrants negatively. There was a story where a guy had done something and they had to keep mentioning that he was Polish. I'm like wtf does being Polish have to do with it. They're always fear mongering and it makes me sick.

I shouldn't even let the Daily Mail bother me anymore.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics show that, as of 2010, London's foreign-born population is 2,650,000 (33 per cent), up from 1,630,000 in 1997. (From Wikipedia).

1 in 7 rioters were foreign born, that's 14%.

So, actually foreigners were doing LESS rioting as a proportion of the population that the British-born. WE SHOULD BE APPLAUDED, NOT DERIDED.
Summer 97 - first visited friends in London
99-00 - studied at Uni of Sussex on exchange
Feb 02 - moved to London on BUNAC
Sep 02 - WP granted (IT skills shortage list)
Sep 04 - WP renewed
Sep 06 - WP renewed again (screwed by 4-5 year ILR change)
Sep 07 - ILR!
March 09 - Citizenship!
July 09 - bone marrow transplant :(
18 Sep 10 - wedding!
Mar 12 - half marathon in Paris! 1:47:12!
Oct 12 - Amsterdam FULL marathon! 3:48:23!

Look, the world has to be warned about the Samoans. They're a dangerous, nasty bunch.

(I'm not talking about people who live in American Samoa, who are obviously the salt of the earth, but rather the independent chain of islands to the west of them.)

Any reference to a total group of people in a negative (or positive) manner is stereotyping. Not all Samoans are dangerous and nasty.  ???

fwiw, I took britwit's comment to be sarcastic, in response to the ridiculousness of the article. Not trying to put word in britwit's mouth but that's just how I took it.

Yes, I agree that BritWrit was making a joke - not seriously saying that Samoans are dangerous & nasty.

It's just the Daily Mail - pick the 'major ill of society' (mob hysteria) du jour:  immigrants, homosexuals, the welfare state, feminism, yob culture, liberalism, atheism...mix & match, rinse, repeat.
