Happy Halloweeeeeen!!!!
« on: October 28, 2011, 07:54:26 PM »
Are you doing anything?  A fancy dress (costume) party?  Staying home for trick-or-treaters?  Anything?  Nothing?

I'm got my DVD watching all sorted out for the weekend:

The Walking Dead - catch up with those awesome American zombies & Sheriff Rick Grimes (swoon)!!! (but stay the heck outta Atlanta!)
Halloween (the first one)
The Nightmare Before Christmas
It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!!

Oh yeah, and if we get through all those, I also have this.

 >:D

I've been recruited in to do some face painting at a local community centre party tonight. On the actual night I will just keep my fingers crossed that we have some trick or treaters.

Does anyone get real trick-or-treaters over there? My UK husband says they never used to. Then when it did get adopted over there, it was viewed as sort of begging and sometimes they got hooligans who expected money (at least in his neck of the woods). I would be thrilled to see real little trick-or-treaters...a little something that feels like home. Does it happen much?

We usually get between 6-12 groups of trick or treaters...and they always make me smile

Unfortunately I have to work the night shift on Halloween this year, so I'll be sitting in my office next to the airfield all night writing forecasts for the next day :P.

I think it depends on the area where you live.  In the entire time I've lived here, I think we've gotten maybe a total of 3 Halloween related knocks on the door in 7 years.  The couple years that we did have someone knock, I had forgotten it was Halloween & hadn't gotten any candy in for giving out so I just ignored it.  Afterwards, it didn't seem worth preparing for kiddies that weren't going to show up anyway.

On the other hand, we do occasionally get Christmas carolers at Christmas time who are wanting money to be given out - which I think is weird.  I have been told that sometimes this could be for a legitimate charity in which case the carolers ought to be able to produce some kind of ID to that effect, but in my experience here - they have just been (usually kids) wanting money.  :P

I wonder if trick-or-treaters wanting money is sort a merge between Halloween and the old tradition for Guy Fawkes of children begging 'penny for the guy' around Guy Fawkes Day?

Yeah, it might be that all that stuff is related from Halloween right through to Christmas...what's new is old and what's old is new & all that.

I can't help but think that carving a turnip would be really hard to do - harder even than carving a pumpkin.  Has anyone tried it (carving a turnip)?

You could wear a costume while you do it!!!  ;D

We don't get trick or treaters which I find sad. I really miss seeing all the little ones dressed up. One place I used to live, I'd have at least 200 a year. I planned ahead, buying a bit each week and making up nice treat bags with a pencil, silly straw, cute erasers, stickers, a small candy bar and a bit of other candy. Amazing how inexpensive it can be shopping at the everything for a dollar places.

We've been watching a lot of 'seasonal' movies - 'House of 1000 Corpses', 'The Exorcist', 'Shaun of the Dead' etc. I'm sure we'll fit more in.

We hit a few pubs with friends last night. I intended to dress up, but it was rainy and there was no way I was going to wear my costume out in the weather and ruin it, and didn't have the heart to come up with plan B. I ended up in jeans and my Trick or Treat t-shirt with a cute Halloween necklace. Even that got quite a few stares and whispers until three girls showed up in costume. The second place was having a Halloween party so nearly everyone was in costume.

I've decided that for next year, I will have plan B costume ideas in case it rains. My main costume is a medieval bar wench dress that was supposed to be for a friend's wedding, and came to over $200 after shipping, in '99. After the 30 day money back guarantee time was over, they decided they couldn't afford to do the wedding the way they wanted to, so the four of us who 'HAD' to order our dresses early were stuck with them. It is fantastic and I love it, but it just isn't practical for everyday life.

Sainsbury's was out of pumpkins - cooking and carving! I was hoping to do some baking and cooking today. I had some delicious curried pumpkin the other night and wanted to try to recreate it.

I picked up one of those Oil and Vinegar treat or treat surprise bags the other day and I got some Halloween cookie cutters so I am going to bake some sugar cookies tonight.

We were up in the Dales over the weekend and I thought Halloween-y thoughts as we walked through the autumnal landscape.  Today is the actual day but in the 5 years we've lived here we have never gotten a single trick-or-treater.

We could look for something Halloween-y to watch tonight online as it's too late to order anything from Lovefilm.

I wish it was more Halooweeeenie ;-)

I had 2 kids last night (yes last night) I opened the door and looked at the mom and said oh sorry I dont have candy since Halloween is tomorrow (she laughed).

The last few years I think we had 2 people each time - I am him hawing on getting ANY candy for the 2-3 kids b/c then I eat it all. lol

Tonight sounds like a good night for Charlie Brown and maybe a little snuggle up with popcorn and the puppy.

Then again I dont do costumes really - I always stink at them and it seems they cost so much money!

hope ya'll have fun today/night

I was at a Children with Diabetes Conference all weekend down in England and we had a Halloween Disco! The costumes were amazing!!  I was a witch with the plague thanks the rats and skulls on my necklace...
The coolest thing too was that many of the staff for the event brought over tons and tons of American halloween candy - so I have a bag twizzlers, "proper smarties", dum dums, blow pops, swedish fish, gummy lifesavers, etc!   ;D

Because I have been very busy having fun over the weekend, I didn't realise until I logged onto facebook this morning that New England got a massive Halloween snowstorm- so I got to see photos on facebook uploaded of kids in halloween costumes in a foot of snow in New England!  :o
I know two of my sisters are without power because of FB, but I have't spoken to my parents, so I dunno if they are or not!
I've never gotten food on my underpants!

Sounds like you had a great weekend with the Halloween Disco! Just my type of thing. ;D The bag of American candy is a great bonus.

I forgot to pick us up any candy. Even though we don't get trick or treaters, I still buy a little for hubby and me in the spirit of the day (or because I just like chocolate). Unless I get the umph to wander to the shop to get any, we'll just break into the Tootsie Rolls and Peeps in my stash from our trip to the States this summer.

I remember a couple years of trick or treating in the snow (in Indiana) as a kid. Mom would insist on coats and we'd be upset that no one would see our costumes. Nothing like the massive snowfall New Englanders are trick or treating in this year, but a couple inches.

We didn't get any trick or treaters, as expected, but I am happily munching Tootsie Rolls midgees and watching an old Boris Karloff movie. We're watching a lot of spooky movies today.
