Catching up with taxes, can I do it myself?
« on: October 30, 2011, 09:30:56 PM »
Hello All,
I have been living here since 2006 and haven't done my taxes because I got some bad advice and thought I hadn't earned enough.  I am now wanting to apply for my husbands green card and have found that I DO need to file my taxes.  My question is that I've looked at the 2555 form and it looks pretty straight forward.  Is it possible to do it myself?  Has anyone tried to do this?

Any guidance here would be appreciated as I'm wanting to apply for my husband asap.

Thanks!

It depends on how complicated your applications are, but I think most people on here file themselves.  The 2555 is pretty easy.

The question is whether you have any bank accounts in your name over 10,000 US dollars at any point.  If so you needed to file the FBAR and I am not sure about doing that retroactively.

I don't have any bank accounts over that amount unfortunately  so that's not a problem.  I've printed out the 2555 EZ form so I'm going to have a go at doing it myself.  I think the hardest part will be trying to remember all the trips we took to Europe!  Thanks for your reply!

Cleancty, I'm curious, why do you need to remember the number of times you've been to Europe?

For US taxes all you need to tally is the numbers of days spent in the US and out of the US, it doesn't matter where outside the US.

Oh, right.  I didn't read the form properly.  Thanks for pointing out!  :D

No probs and good luck. If you have only salary as income, it shouldn't be too hard with just the 2555 and 1040 forms to fill out.
