I do believe I was one of those last week at this time, well at least from what I've been told  :P
Won't be doing that again any time soon!

I fear, despite my resolve to behave, that will be me tomorrow. We're off to my first beer festival, and I do adore trying new to me cask ales and beers. I think I'd better skip the outfit I have planned and go for jeans and trainers to be on the safe side.  ::)

all these years in the UK and this is your first beer fest?!?!?!

Most beer fests serve half pints, so if you're worried about 'behaving yourself' make sure you stick to these.  Also, the ABV should be clearly displayed in the programme and on the casks themselves, so if you're worried, stick to the low-gravity ones and you should be ok.

Oh have a great time!! I am off to the pub tonight for hubby's school reunion. Not drinking at all. I over did it so badly last weekend that I honestly gag at the thought of alcohol. Will stick to lemonade!

Back to the doners.....big difference between the mystery meat (whether theoretically chicken or lamb) and actual kebabs, with chunks of real, identifiable meat.

Unfortunately many 'kebab shops' cater to drinkers who want a late night meal and aren't particularly cognizant of anything. Might taste o.k. at the time, but personally I like to know what I am eating, the hygiene, how long that 'meat' has been under a heat light on that spit.....

The best chicken 'kebabs' in the universe can only be had in Binghamton, NY, where they are known as 'spiedies'. Now THAT is a treat you will never forget, and you absolutely know what you are eating. Anyone from the Southern Tier of NY can attest to that!

I guess we have kebabs. Well, actually I have chicken (quite identifiable and yummy) kebab...and DH has the doner. As I said, I have tried both, and really dislike the mystery meat. The people at the chippy that do ours definitely don't cater to late night drinkers, they're only open til 8pm

Maybe it is regional.  ???
In Glasgow, chicken doners are the ones cut off those revolving spit things, similar to the lamb ones, but... chicken kebabs are those ones lying inside the refrigerated glass case, on a skewer, with vegetables.

The chicken doners that I have had were incredible... soft naan or pitta (depending on the shop), lots of lovely charred chicken, salad, and a garlic mayonnaise.  YUM.  I take my lamb doners the same way... with garlic mayonnaise instead of that bright red chilli sauce.

I've never seen ones on skewers lying inside refrigerated glass cases - but then I've never been into a kebab shop. I think of PROPER kebabs as lovely marinated meat on skewers with nice chunks of vegetables. I do them when we have barbecues and I love them.

But doner is nasty. Yes, it's that stuff sliced off a big hanging lump of meat. Shudder. Around here those are also called kebabs or doner or doner kebabs. Very confusing!

Our local(ish) kebab shop has the marinated meat on skewers in the refrigerated glass case. And they are to die for... They do a huge salad on the side and make their own garlic/yogurt sauce and chili sauce. Oh the chili sauce.... I need to go for a kebab now. ;D

Depends on the shop, i guess. I dont think doners are nasty...i genuinely like them, nor do i have concerns about the hygiene of the shops i go to.

As does mine. I just don't like the taste honestly. I only called it mystery meat because the first time we went I asked him what kind of meat it was and he shrugged his shoulders.
Its always nice and clean in our chippy where we get ours.

Guess what we're having tonight  ;D

I've never had doner! Of course that's mainly because there's no vegetarian doner (that I've seen at least.)

This thread is making me hungry, though.

Oddly enough, it was. I've been on countless pub crawls but had never been to a beer fest. We ended up hitting five pubs for one at each on the way there, at a very leisurely pace, so no one was loopy by the time we got there. While we were there we had a few, and sampled some of the incredible grilled food they had for sale. Eating before getting started, and eating while we were there definitely helped. For the most part I stuck to 'low gravity' ones, but did have a half pint of an out of this world raspberry beer that was 8.something percent. The taste was amazing beyond words, but the percentage was too much to keep up with.

Our local(ish) kebab shop has the marinated meat on skewers in the refrigerated glass case. And they are to die for... They do a huge salad on the side and make their own garlic/yogurt sauce and chili sauce. Oh the chili sauce.... I need to go for a kebab now. ;D

I've been to a few where I have seen the chicken and beef on skewers in a glass case, which then go on the grill if you order a kebab that calls for them.

Yeah, ours do the doner kebabs as well. :) And they are delicious... I'm pretty picky about doner meat. That's the only place I've liked it from.

It's lamb.

I will always remember going to Cornwall 20 years ago or so, and getting a pasty that was described as a 'meat pasty'.  So I asked what kind of meat it was.  (Now I know that when something is described as 'meat', it is almost always lamb, but I didn't know this at the time!)

Anyway, the woman serving the pasty just shrugged and said 'it's just meat', and I was like, well what animal is it from?  And she said she didn't know!  :o

Pasties are always beef, preferably skirt. Unless they're the 'novelty' pasties made for tourists.
