Soon to retire from US Military/UK wife
« on: November 07, 2011, 01:55:44 PM »
Hello all,

My name is Brian and I'm getting ready to retire from the US military next summer. I've lived in England on and off for 7 years. I'm seriously considering relocating the family back as it's the only place my wife and I truly love....but all things considered is love enough?

Heh...I can't quite work out why love wouldn't be enough. Unless you mean it's breath-takingly expensive to live here (our retirement plan is to work until we keel over).

Anyway, welcome to the forum.

That is something we all need to debate!  I guess it depends on what you have there and what you are looking to have here. :D

I just meant if your wife wasn't British then loving the UK wouldn't be enough to get you a visa.

Would you be looking to find a job in the UK? I know the military retires personnel at a fairly young age, so just wondering.  So maybe you need to think about what you'd be doing (also your wife) other than just appreciating the country.  And also have you thought about where you might want to live.

It comes down to the age old battle between heart and head. I'm fairly certain I can find employment with the US governmnet.

First thing, what base are you near by? As a retiree, you need to work on base with a job guarenteeing you a minimum of 20 hours. This will let you apply for your componency stamp in your passport authorizing you all base prevledges ( you want and NEED this to prevent you from paying council tax, plus you can shop onbase ie, BX, commissary, etc without having to use VAT coupons. If you're in the UK already, send me a PM, I'll provide you my duty phone and we can answer any questions you might have.
