French's Onions (or substitute)
« on: November 12, 2011, 04:26:55 PM »
Well, of course thanksgiving is coming back and I'm sure I've posted this in the past, but does anyone know where to get French's Fried Onions (or a reasonable substitute)?

I've finally found Bachelors Cream of Mushroom condensed soup, took 2 years, but an Asda on the other side of Birmingham from where i live stocks it.  French cut green beans are available in the form of sliced runner beans.  Just need the onions and I'll be set!

All the UK supermarkets sell crispy fried onions.  I can't remember the brand... Danpak or something like that?  They're with the salad dressings in my local shop.

I have some crispy fried shallots in my cupboard at the moment, which I bought in a Chinese market.

Amazon UK sells the French's brand, but I can't see spending nearly £3 for a pack when the ones in my local supermarket are only 99p.

We bought some just this week from melburyandapleton.co.uk.  They are £3.  You can either pay for delivery or pick them up from their London office.  We also got some Libby's pumpkin from them.

I'm with Blue Pigeon. Why pay extra when they're in all the supermarkets?

Dh & I have seen them in Tescos near where the Ketchup is that's where we saw the last time we were at Tesco. We also saw them at Aldis as well there in a clear plastic tub. our green beans we use for green bean casserole we get at ASDA I think there either Danish or French there in a short fat can a little pricey for what you get but there really good beans though. ;)  :)

I use fresh beans. They're better than tinned!

The first year I was here I wasn't finding them anywhere, but saw some on the salad bar at Morrison's. I have since seen them on the shelves at various places, but go ahead and get them from the salad bar since I know I like the taste of them. Plus, with the various sizes of salad bar dishes, you can choose the amount you want or need.

This post made me chuckle. I'm packing to visit my fiance in Belfast (I leave Friday, yay!) and I packed both French's Fried Onions and Libby's Pumpkin Pie Filling in my suitcase for the holiday lol :)

Good thinking! I had every intention of bringing a few cans of Libby's pumpkin back this summer, but when I got over there in the oppressive heat and humidity of southern Indiana in July pumpkin pie was the last thing on my mind for those three weeks.

You can buy tinned Libbys pumpkin here at Waitrose.  :)

People have said that some of their shops carry it year-round, but most seem to have it as a seasonal thing around Thanksgiving.

A friend gave me a bunch of pumpkin that I pureed and froze. I will be trying that this year for the first time to see how I like it. We've been a Libby's family for quite some time. Both my grandmas, all my aunts and my mom all used it. It will be a fun (and hopefully tasty) experiment to see what I think of straight from the pumpkin pie.

Thanks for this. I found them today in Morrisons. They're called Onion Salad Crispies and they're made by Danfood. Taste the same as Frenchs, only difference is they're broken up more but that's not a problem for me.

I used the Marks & Spencer store brand cream of mushroom soup this year and my green bean casserole tasted a LOT more like it did in the States! Woohoo! I'll be making it again for Christmas, now that the taste makes me happy. The past two Thanksgivings I made it because it was tradition and I love it, but I wasn't as happy with the end result as I was this time. This one was worth making again.  ;D  [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]
