Move from AK to UK for husband's graduate school
« on: November 27, 2011, 02:12:24 AM »
Hello all!

We have been contemplating moving to the UK for some time now for my husband to study abroad. We are both Occupational Therapists, and he is looking to gain a second masters in Physiotherapy. He is still researching schools at the present to see which will fit his purposes better. His likely start date is September of 2012... or if it doesn't work out, the following September.

At the present, I am not a practicing clinician, but a stay-at-home Mom to our 21 month old son. When we do move to the UK, I most likely will practice at least part-time, and have need of childcare, in whatever form.

We currently live in Anchorage, Alaska USA. I am originally from Arlington, VA (Washington DC area) and my husband is from Louisiana. Prior to moving to AK, we did travel therapy together (basically working for a company that moves you to different clinics/hospitals, etc needing therapists for 13 week contracts). Needless to say, we love traveling as well as experiencing different regional culture.

So glad to have found this forum! While I have a friend that has been in Bangor, Wales for several years getting her PhD, I am happy to not have to bug her constantly for questions.

Thank you so much in advance!

Best,
Amanda

Welcome!  What part of Louisiana is your husband from?  I am from New Orleans :)  I would say the cold would be my first warning to you but since you're in Alaska I think you have that well covered!  Good luck with all of your research :)  We do tend to be a friendly lot so don't hesitate to ask questions!

Thank you everyone! Much appreciated!

My husband is from Alexandria/Pineville area, but has family that lives in Lafayette and surrounding areas as well.

Yes, Alaska has us well suited to snow, cold and cooler summers than in the contiguous US.

I certainly will be taking full advantage of the resources here. After talking to my friend in Bangor this morning, I am quite excited at all of our prospects. Now the waiting game begins as to where he is accepted and the like.

I fully expect to have a bit of a culture shock in terms of language and local vernacular and the like. I just hope that I don't make a complete imbecile of myself! Though, admittedly, I am apt to laugh if so (which I am sure is to be expected!)

I know Lafayette well :)  I went to primary and secondary school in a town about an hour west of there!  Good luck with everything!

Hello and welcome to the forum!

So what took you to Alaska?

What has made you two want to move to the UK? Have you traveled around it much?

Sorry for all the questions, I tend to get overly inquisitive!
 ;)
9/11/2012 Husband mailed his US citizenship application.
9/17/2012 Received e-mail stating his application has been entered into the system.
9/22/2012 Hubby received letter with date for finger printing.
10/12/12 Hubby went for finger printing.
10/26/12 Dh got a letter stating when he should appear for his interview and test- 11/27/12- just a month away!!!
11/27/12 We went to dh's interview and test- he passed and we went back 4 hours later for the Oath Ceremony! 95 people from 38 countries, really pretty cool!
So he's now a US citizen!!
