Tomato puree is tomato paste.  I'm sitting here looking at a can of it now: it's Sainsbury's own brand, double concentrated.  It's in a little can, about 140g.  You can also find it in tubes too.

Ok thank You!  I am totally confused then because  my recipe calls for  tomato  sauce or tomato  puree   (about 28 oz) and  then  a 6 oz can of tomatoe paste...sheesh!!..

what should I use for the  tomato sauce then?  just plain  tomato sauce  with no extras  like basil  or herbs  already in??

i am SSOO glad I found this site!!   my husband tries to help but he doesn't know  any better and  his mother just  'substitutes' everything   she doesn't have or can't find...   which is not very helpful to me because i appreciate it when my food tastes like it  should!!   ;) ;)

Have you looked at Passata?  That's more like sauce than puree.

It comes in larger containers, plus boxes or bottles.  At least with the bottles you can look at it to see if it is the consistency you want.

Caitlinn you took the words right out of my mouth (er, fingertips....) For my Famous lasagne I use passata plus 2 T of tomato puree to intensify the flavo(u)r a bit.... And the tubes of puree are SO great - you can use small amounts and not have to bother with tupperware or whatever to store the remainder of the can.

I think Anne has just given you a good example.  Use passata for sauce, then use tomato puree as an intensifier.

So what are you making then?  And most importantly, do we get a share of spoils?   ;D

I'm probably too late, but Sainsbury's makes what you'd call puree in the states.  Its called 'creamed tomatoes' and its in a box.

I haven't found plain tomato sauce yet.  Tim and I went to Tesco and all I could find was the pasta sauce that's pre-spiced, which I can't have due to allergies, so I always make my own.  Does plain sauce exist?

Try tomato sugocasa at Sainsbury's.  It comes in a jar next to the canned tomatoes.

I make my own from a can of peeled whole italian tomatoes in rich tomato sauce. Plop it in a saucepan, smash up the tomatoes, add seasonings, and let boil away until it's the thickness I want.
Another shameless promotion for www.mclevey.com, the best place on the internet to buy art.

This is how I make my own home-made sauce.  Plus I'll add tomato paste or puree and maybe a little olive oil, and maybe some pesto.
