SSN change of name....registered mail?
« on: September 15, 2004, 08:40:21 AM »
I'm getting ready to send my change of name form to the Fed. Benefits Unit in London.  Should I send it registered mail?  I'm really not happy about sending my passport and marriage certificate....but I gotta!   :-\\\\

Did anybody else use registered mail?  Or did you guys just trust Royal Mail to get it there regularly?

And how about the turnaround time?  How long did it take to get your passport back?

I have not done that yet Lola...  but never send out any important documents without sending it recorded mail...  I am getting ready to send mine out as well for a provisional license...then I need it for NIN appointment...then after all that is done, I will need it to send change of name for passport etc..  It is scarey having to send your passport all over the place...  but since we live up north, far from any offices...we do not have much of a choice...

Be safe...send recorded.

There's 2 types of delivery. One is recorded which doesn't guarantee a time frame but does have the item signed for. The other is special delivery which gets it's own silver envelope, has to be signed for, and is delivered by noon the next day.

For things of value, I'd only use the latter.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Also, special delivery has a higher insurance claim value than recorded delivery (just in case things do get lost).

Lola, please please please pay whatever it costs and get whatever special doodads you possible can.  My MIL didn't and we still haven't received her passports birth certificates etc. that hubby needs to apply for his citizenship, we're losing hope as it's been over a month now.

PLEASE don't do what she did and think the cheapest she could get away with was fine.  This is worth the money.

for my SS card name change, i sent my passport, copy of marriage certificate and appropiate form in via Special Delivery (i think it came to like £9 for the envelope to post them in and also for the return envelope)

I got my passport and marriage cert back within 3 days with a note saying my application was being processed. and i got my amended SS card back about a week later :0
