Getting mail....
« on: December 09, 2011, 04:04:17 PM »
Hi All!

I'll be moving to Edinburgh next August (PhD, minimum of 3 years), so I'm trying to get most of my planning done in a timely way to avoid my inevitable stress.

Does anyone have an idea about the best way to get mail forwarded to you in the UK?  I'm pretty much alone in the world, and once I move, will no longer have a U.S. address (my house will be rented).  I don't have parent's or other relatives to receive mail for me, so does anyone have tips or hints as to how I should best go about getting mail routed to me?  My financial adviser recommended going all paperless for mail, and I will with what I can, but there is bound to be mail I need to have.

Idea or personal experience would be most welcomed!

You should contact the people you will be receiving mail from and provide them with your new address in the UK.

Mail forwarding can be done from the US but not with guaranteed success (that's true even within the US).

The have forwarding services so you still have a US address which might be useful to you.
Below is one I have seen but I have no experience with them

good luck! I would check your local post box people as well, they might do bulk forwarding.

We use this service:
http://www.pmipmi.com/

Our US mail has been delivered via courier once a fortnight for the past 3 years no problems!  I get all my US magazines, etc this way, too.  They set us up with a PO Box in New Jersey that we now use as our official US address.  It is very useful since we still have US credit cards, bank accounts etc.

I do not believe the US postal service will forward mail internationally for free.

I have no idea how much the service costs as it is part of our expat package, but it might be worth looking into.
