Priceline for tix?
« on: December 14, 2011, 08:04:04 PM »
Has anyone used Priceline to name their own price for airfare? Any tips?

Alternately, any tips for buying last minute tickets from US --> UK at this time of year?

I've done Priceline about 3 times, albeit not for a couple of years.  The price you name doesn't include taxes, so keep that in mind.  The way I always did it was to search on Priceline for the flight, and then see what the cheapest 25% of flights looked like (and remember there is a maximum of 1 stop for name your own price, so discount any 2 stop itineraries that come up).  For some reason, Priceline often has flights with ridiculous layovers (like 12 hours), so if a lot of those came up, then I would just forget it and book a normal ticket elsewhere.  But if the cheapest 25% of flights had reasonable itineraries, then I would go ahead and do the NYOP.  I doubt you'll get 40% savings if it's for Christmas, but you might get 25%?

Otherwise?  Check Bing and Kayak.  Check different airports and different combinations of departure/return.

I actually just bought a round trip US--->UK ticket for Delta/KLM last night. I am leaving in 2 weeks, on the 26th. I have literally been checking every website for the past week, I've been up at crazy hours every night trying to find the cheapest fare. It was a last minute decision to go to England after Christmas! I could only find fares for $989-$1050 and even some for $850, which all had ridiculous 10 hr overnight layovers. I finally found one on Travelocity that only has 1 layover each way for no more than 3 hrs, for $837! Considering all the other fares/layover times and that it was last minute, I thought it was a steal. I would say check and compare every discount website and even the airlines website. Compare leaving a day before or after and return before or after your dates. I've never used name your own price but I had looked up information about it before as I was trying to get the cheapest fare. Apparently its pretty hard to get a good price from what I've heard.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info!

I took a day flight to London a few months ago, and the difference in jet lag was un-frickin'-believable. Since I'm dead-set on the day flight (seriously, you can't imagine how much easier it was!), I'm only looking at one airline.

I did find a way to use my credit card points, though - which has brought the price down considerably! Hooray for that, because we're 4 people - which always costs a small fortune.
