fancy molasses?
« on: December 20, 2011, 06:11:11 PM »
A friend linked this recipe for pear gingerbread pudding http://www.cbc.ca/bestrecipes/2011/12/pear-gingerbread-pudding.htmland it calls for "fancy molasses" - anyone know what a good UK substitute would be?

I normally sub treacle for molasses but this seems to differentiate it from "cooking molasses" as describes it as a "delicate, light molasses flavour".

I've never seen Fancy Molasses here, so I'd just go with the treacle. It might not taste exactly the same as it should, but I can guarantee it'll still be delicious!

Maybe try mixing a few tablespoons of treacle with some golden syrup?

For just such emergencies ;) I bought some "molasses sugar", it's lush, especially for cooking savoury things, mmm boston baked beans. You can mix it with either treacle or golden syrup to make a molasses flavoured syrup.

Thanks Cheesebiscuit, looks like according to mysupermarket.com that Tesco's has it.  I'll add some to our next shop in two weeks

Finally, I do not feel alone in my quest to find a suitable substitute for molasses. Not only that, but I found a good answer at the same time!  :D I'm new to UK Yankee. I'm loving this so far.  :D
