another TV question... Sky vs freeview
« on: December 23, 2011, 06:11:00 PM »
Well I've signed up for Sky now for our main TV, but I just plugged our other two TVs into the antenna and it looks like there are more channels than I'd expected.  So is Sky really worth it?  It's still cheaper than my cable was in NYC, so I'm inclined to keep it.  They're sending an engineer to fix our dish and hook it up next week.  Thoughts?

I think standard Freeview through the antenna now has 50 channels (compared to the total of 5 terrestrial channels we had a few years ago before Freeview existed and the 4 channels we had up until 1997!), so I guess it depends on whether or not you're happy with just the channels offered on Freeview or if you want the extras offered by Sky .

Personally, I decided to go with Sky over Freeview because there were some channels I wanted to watch that weren't available on Freeview, plus I've also got unlimited broadband, a Sky+HD box and a phone line with my Sky package... so for me it was better value to get the Sky bundle all together rather than having Freeview and paying for internet and/or phone separately.

It depends on what you want...
You can get a DVR (Sky+) box for freeview with FreeSat if your landlord is already installing a dish, just to have it pointed to the correct satellite to get freeview..

We get several HD channels which we wouldn't get with Freesat/Freeview.  Plus, we watch a lot of Sky Atlantic and PBS which you have to have a pay format to get.  As other people have said, we'd still need to pay for internet and phone, so we added Sky for not all that much more.

True, but for free tv, its a large selection of channels.. Thats even more than we would get back home for not having cable...

Oh, just a thought, as Kerri mentioned 'free' TV - if you haven't already done so, you'll need to purchase a TV licence in order to watch any TV at all... it's £145.50 per year and is technically a tax, so it's actually a criminal offense if you watch TV (whether Freeview or Sky) without having a TV licence.

Yep, I've got the licence.  I had read about it before we moved here, but just in case, they managed to send us a reminder not 3 days after we'd moved into our house!
