Add vitamin D to Scotland's food
« on: December 24, 2011, 06:05:40 AM »
I had no idea the lack of sunlight could cause MS or anything else aside from Seasonal Mood Disorder(?). Very interesting read. I never thought the lack of sunlight in Scotland was so severe.

Part of the problem is we are so afraid to get skin cancer, when we do venture out, we tend to lather on the sunblock.

You should get 10 minutes of sunlight to your skin when the sun is at  or near its highest during the late spring/summer/early autumn months.  Other times we should supplement with the right type of vitamin D or eat oily fish daily.

ETA: It's not just Scotland.  Kids in England have been developing rickets for a while. :(

I got adult rickets after living in the UK for 8 years. It was complicated by 2 pregnancies 23 months apart. I would never move back to the UK without stocking up on massive quantities of D and calcium.

My former BIL has MS and it's a version that came on suddenly and has left him very ill. He's from the north of England and not a big outdoorsy kind of guy.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon
