I think a fishmonger is a fish dealer? My gg-grandfather was one in London and yes, funny because I a allergic to fish. Let me know if i am off. :)
We are all each a little bit crazy, a little bit different and a little bit the same.

Rosiebee...My husband works in Bolton, at the television mast on Winter Hill...you know the one, the giant mast on the hill with the red lights!

I know it!  I grew up near Bolton.

Hi Brigette,
I'm a born and bred Bolton lass. Husband is the US citizen and has joined me here in Bolton. I also happen to be a qualified social worker but have worked in the charity sector for a few years now and am looking to get back into social work.

This is a good site to keep an eye on
https://www.yourcounciljobs.co.uk/Jobs.aspx?sMinimumSalary=0&sMaximumSalary=0&sJobTypeLook=673&sSimple=&SAuthority_id=-1

The main councils in the Manchester area (you can see all their logos at the bottom of the page) all post their jobs here. You can check their individual websites but as far as social work vacancies they all seem to put them here. One thing I have noticed since I have wanted to get back into social work is.. there seems to be a lot more vacancies coming up in children's social work (I am adults specialism) and any adults posts do seem to be in mental health.

As for areas to live, well I am probably not the best to advise as born and bred in Bolton I say familiarity breads contempt  ;D I would probably stick to south Manchester if you want leafy, suburban areas or near city centre. If you are after industrial and gritty then by all means come to Bolton, Rochdale and Oldham ;)

Thanks so much for the info and link on social work.  Regarding where to live, leafy suburban for my sister and nephew (I could live there as well)  and areas near city centre for me :)

My friend lives in Withington which is supposed to be nice and isn't too far from the City Centre about 4 miles and close to Curry Mile!  :D An area I have always liked the look of is Didsbury http://www.didsburylife.com/ but I would imagine some parts of it are quite pricey.

Indeed, I can see it afar when I look out my window!  Winter Hill is close to a couple of the nicer parts of Bolton - Rivington & Horwich. I often go walking up Rivington it's a lovely area and there are a few lovely parts of Bolton but unfortunately I can't afford to live in them  ;D

Pluses and minuses everywhere  ;D ... being so close to Winter Hill you get all the Freeview Channels  ;)

But I love the north of England full stop. Wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

Married December 1992 (my 'old flame' whom I first met in the mid-70s)
1st move to UK - 1993 (Letter of Consent granted at British Embassy in Washington DC)
ILR - 1994 (1 year later - no fee way back then!)
Back to US in 2000
Returned to UK July 2011 (Spousal Visa/KOL endorsement)
ILR - September 2011
Application for naturalization submitted July 2014
Approval received 15-10-14; ceremony scheduled for 10 November!
Passport arrived 25 November 2014. Finally done!

I'm with you on that! The reason you get the freeview channels is because my husband does such a great job making sure those transmitters are strong and healthy! lol

Hi

A Fihmonger is a retailer of fish and seafood. A 'dealer' usually indicates a distributor or wholesaler and is a different level in the supply chain. That said, there's probably a distributor who also retails!

Racheee - I'm all for technology - except I don't have time to watch TV! what a luxury!

Brigette - I know nothing about the Social Worker type industry, although, I seem to recall that workers in this field are in demand including people from abroad. Good luck with your job hunt! it boils down to part of my response where you'll need to look at the actual salary you'll be getting once you secure a position and working out your mandatory costs from your take home pay as to where in Manchester you can actually live.

rightmove.co.uk is a good resource which I'll assume you already know about, if you can and do live with your sister, perhaps with agreement in splitting the cost, you could look at living in the pricier areas ?

I used to live in Sandbach (Cheshire & around 25-30 miles SW of Manchester) until I was 10, and we had friends of the family in Manchester, in the times I've been back there for business or seeing friends, I do like the place as well !

Cheers, DtM! West London & Slough UK!

I live in Sale, but I work in Horwich, right under that mast. I've been so tempted to take a drive up there :)

You can drive up to the first set of cattle grids (at the top of Georges Lane, I think) and you can walk up to the mast, but you can't really drive up there (legally) its reall interesting, like being on the surface of the moon! Its bizarre! My husband is so spoiled, he works somewhere beautiful everyday, he could never work in an office now! I am in Chorlton, right next to Sale! My BFF lives in Sale, its lovely there.

I have a thing for broadcast towers I think lol. The missus and I drove out to see the Emely Moor mast at Huddersfield a few months ago and it's very impressive. One weekend we'll have to drive/stroll up to see this one :)

Hi everyone,

I know that it has been a while since I inquired about Manchester, but if anyone has anything else to add to the Manchester thread, please feel free to add.

An update for me: getting my documentation (and the fees) ready to apply to the HCPC for my degree evaluation.  What a task....

One step at a time as they say :)

Here's a good thread for social work info: http://talk.uk-yankee.com/index.php?topic=21614.0  It's Calling All Social Workers and has lots of information.

I can't tell you about Manchester itself, but there are usually job openings in social work, but the scope of what is considered social work is much more narrow here in the States.  Social workers in their training usually choose either child or adult work and then you don't cross over.  I've been lucky that I've been able to do a little of both because I started at a drug and alcohol programme that focuses on helping families.  I'm currently doing some part-time Children's Services work as the other job didn't work with raising a family.

Generally there are openings to be found in child protection social work around the country.  Other, more specialized positions have been much harder to come by during government cutbacks due to the recession.
