Passport case? Essential or pointless?
« on: January 12, 2012, 04:48:35 PM »
I wasn't sure where to put this thread, so move if needed :)

I was looking at Passport cases and I'm in love with the Hello kitty ones (childish I know) but I honestly don't know if I need one.

For those that have them, do they come in handy? Just curious!

Well hardly "essential"  but fun :) which is good enough reason in itself.

I travel most months (sometime several times) and my passport is showing it's useage anyway, so without a case would be absolutely totaled. You normally need to take it out for border control just FYI.

All depends on your taste. Get one if you want one, why not?
I too travel a lot and I use one because I carry two passports (one with visa in it/one renewed passport) - although I have the stamp in my new passport that says I have a visa and I usually just show that one and don't have problems.  But I always dread that one day they may actually wish to see the visa, so I keep it on reserve.

Well, DS is intending to get one of the RFID Blocking passport cases, which prevents "electronic pickpocketing".  Apparently, they have slots for your credit cards as well.

(I doubt if "Hello Kitty" has this feature!)

I think they are nice because they prevent the passport from getting bent or ruined in your travel bag. My friend got me a union jack one recently :) It's nice but you have to remove the passport at the border and at security so it can be a hassle.

I've had the L.L. Bean type carriers, which you can wear around your neck -- I always have a panic attack about where my passports are!  Trouble is they're not so useful for your boarding pass.

Personally, I wouldn't get one.  My DH has one, and his passport has actually become more beaten up because he has to keep taking it out of the cover for passport control, then putting it back in again.  Plus, it's bulky.  I just keep my passport in a small side pocket of my carry-on, and it never gets bent or damaged.  But to each his own, and I agree that if you want a Hello Kitty one, you should go for it :).

I've got a pink one  ;D

Not essential (not in the way a phone case or cover is) but fun  :D

Neither essential nor pointless but pretty and fun. :) Also, at least a little useful.

I've got a pink one, too! Makes it easy to spot in my bag and prevents panic.  Also nice because we have biometric ID cards, and I like keeping everything together -- but don't trust just shoving it between passport pages.

DH had a little panic just the other day and couldn't find his passport. He always puts it in a sock drawer. Turns out it had gotten itself upended against the front of the drawer, so he couldn't see it.  Now, maybe if he had it in a (pink?) case he would have spotted it  ;D

For my first trip over, I bought one of the American Tourister ones that holds your passport and tickets, with the cord to go around your neck. I was finished wearing it before I left the Indianapolis airport, and threw it in my bag. While it made everything easy to find I ended up with the hassle of taking it out and putting it back. Now I just use a Vera Bradley handbag when I travel, and designate one pocket for passport and boarding passes, one for lots of chewing gum, one for extra pens for crosswords, etc.

Still, being the friend of a die hard (at 40) Hello Kitty fan, and loving all things Smurfs myself, I'd say go for it.  ;D

I like queuing at the airports and spotting which passport people are carrying. Those cases ruin it for me  :P

I love having everything together - passport, tickets and my itinerary but I am OCD  ;D

I also have my Irish passport and my US passport so I must carry two as well.  I am usually the one to carry the whole families.

I have had this carry case since 1996 and I love it!  The passports are protected and all together but no taking them in and out of the little cases.

I was on the hunt forever for a leather wallet that could hold 2 passports and two sections for notes and change. I found one a couple of years ago by Mandarina Duck and it is my dedicated travel wallet. It is perfect for travel.
