I really dislike Rushdie.  I know I shouldn't, but I do.  :-\\\\

this was my first go at him and he certainly didn't get me excited to read more! The sad thing is the premise of the story and the way he was going about telling it should have been interesting, he just didn't pull it off.  :-X

I'm reading a new Lee Child book, but I REALLY screwed up!!!! I went to the library after renewing the books I'd had about three times........so it had been awhile since my last visit. They changed EVERYTHING! It's all self serve now. I picked up two books, where the quick reads used to be, not really paying attention to the NEON BRIGHT YELLOW STICKERS pasted across the front of the books, saying one week rental, no renewals! Now I owe a fee because I simply could NOT return the books in time, and well, I could turn them in tomorrow, BUT, I want to finish at least one! The Lee Child one. (It's really good.)

Just started reading 'Dreams from my Father' by Obama.  Dh liked it and he's ultra fussy about what he reads.

Books I love:

The Making of a Marchioness-Frances Hodgson Burnett

Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh.

The Confederacy of Dunces.

Excellent choices all!  ;D

You're not alone.  I find Salman Rushdie impenetrable.

Same here. I've tried and failed. I even heard him speak last year in person and that was just as impenetrable to me as his writing!

The Ongoing Moment by Geoff Dyer. Next up Novel About My Wife by Emily Perkins. I'm going to really try not to fall off of the reading bandwagon again....

How's the Geoff Dyer going?

I just finished When Will There Be Good News? by Kate Atkinson and Miss Buncle Married by D.E. Stevenson and am now on Chez Moi by Agnes Desarthe.

Re-reading Wild Swans by Jung Chan. This is such an epic book, although I do wonder how accurate some of it is. Still, it's a nice overview of the time through the experiences of one family.

I read some of it out loud to DH and DS while we were camping and was surprised that they enjoyed it.

I really liked that book.

I'm always reading bits of my books out loud to my family too.  :)  Sometimes they aren't too appreciative...  :P

Yes! I like to read out amusing or amazing snippets, but this time (the foot binding and warlordy bit) they wanted to hear more. I loved it!

I've now finished Atonement and have to go to the bookstore for something new.

I recently read The White Tiger, by Aravind Adiga, and then The Secret Scripture by Sebastian Barry.  And although The White Tiger was extremely well-written, interesting and also very funny, I have to agree with those who say that Barry was robbed when Adiga was awarded the Man Booker prize.  I found Barry harder to get into, but it was ultimately the more fascinating story.
