Revelation by C.J. Sansom.  Love historically based detectives.

Have you read any Boris Akunin?  He's one of Mr. A's favourite detective story writers.  His books are set in late 19th century Russia.

ETA: Almost forgot to post what I was reading:

"A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers"-Xiaolu Guo, which I am really enjoying.  I think it's one of those books you you love or hate.  I heard about it a few months ago on Radio 4, and the people were split about it.  It's about a woman who comes to London from China to learn English, and the author started writing it as she was actually learning English, so she begins to write "properly" as the book progresses (at least that is what I remember from the Radio 4 broadcast, but every reference online refers to it as constructed).  The fact that it's written with a lot of non-standard English and a very sparse writing style bothers some people.  I actually find it to be very well done.

I'm reading The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson and I'm having a really hard time getting into it. It's gotten incredible reviews and DH loved it so I'm going to stick with it.

Thanks for the recommendation -- I'll see if I can find any of his.

Just finished Maeve Binchy's book Echoes. Would like to read another of hers. Any suggestions?

Any of her books I've liked. I've read several, Evening Class sticks out in my mind most though. Maybe because it seemed to be a bit different from her others.

Thanks! Did you enjoy Scarlett Feather? Was on sale at the used book store and I passed it up because the jacket copy didn't intrigue me too much.

I haven't read that one. I am so bad that way too, I am always judging books by their covers! I've read most of her older books, say before 2000. Circle of friends was good, if I remember correctly it was made into a movie as well.

I'm reading A Breath of Snow and Ashes, the 6th in the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon.  The 7th book comes out in Sept in the US and I'm having it shipped to me instead of waiting for it in January in the UK.

I have GOT to say, I MISS Larry McMurtry. I can't find his novels in the libraries here, don't know why, there are so many other American authors.....and I hate to buy books new, because I can't read a book twice. But I LOVE his books!! I so miss them!

Aye, the new one comes out Sept 22nd in the US, so I've ordered one on amazon.com.  Will pay a lot more for shipping but I dinna care!  Ordered one for stepdaughter as well as she's on the 5th book just now.

I just started reading the books during the past year so it's been one right after the other.

Did you know they do Outlander tours in Scotland, and one is called the Jamie and Claire tour.  They take you to the settings in the books for a hefty fee.  However, my SD now lives in Inverness so she and I will go on our own tour!

Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire by Amanda Foreman

Excellent choice!

I agree! Boris Akunin is really wonderful!

I've just finished Cover Her Face by PD James and The Secret Intensity of Everyday Life (fab!) by William Nicholson. Now I'm about to start on A History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters by Julian Barnes for my next book club meeting. Has anyone read it?

I liked Scarlett Feather!

I've just started One for the Money by Janet Evanovich.

Went to the library today for the first time in a long while!  As I've got a few trips next week and DH will be out of town, I needed to stock up.

I've already read (today!):

Somewhere Off the Coast of Maine - Ann Hood
An Exact Replica of a Figment of My Imagination - Elizabeth McCracken

Left to go are:
Unconfessed - Yvette Christianse
The Secret Scripture - Sebastian Barry
The Knitting Circle - Ann Hood
The Great Man - Kate Christensen
One Fifth Avenue - Candace Bushnell
The Epicure's Lament - Kate Christensen

I'm a bit worried I am going to finish these before I leave!

I'm the same way with books, when I have time to read I just blow through them!

I think I'm going to save up for a Kindle. It would save me loads in baggage weight! I would still have to read regular books, though.

Just got Fierce Invalids Home from Hot Climates by Tom Robbins today. It's supposed to be my holiday book, but I might have to read it before then...  :)
