Balsamic Dreams by Joe Queenan. I was in the mood for some good snarky ranting.

Yes, I liked it.  I'll admit I'm a bit biased because his wife is from our town so he spends a lot of time in this area and there are funny references to places I'm familiar with.

My kids loved his decription of "Dead and Breakfast" tourism and especially the Berkeley Castle visit.  It's one of our favorite places, and we knew Edward II had been murdered there but didn't know about the red hot poker up the bum.  Having read the book, now we can't ever go there without remembering:
Edward the Second drew the joker,
When Queen Isabella said 'Let's play poker.'

Same thing every time we go to Gloucester Cathedral (where Edward II is buried).

I hadn't read any of his books before (just magazine articles), but I heard him speak at the Hay Festival this year and he was so very funny!

Oh, my! I didn't know that!!  :o

Yes, but now that you know it you'll find you can't ever un-know it, especially if you read Queenan Country.  ;D

You have liked it! It was a small room and a small crowd, so we all got to chat with him afterwards.

I Googled and everything says that story is "uncorroborated" ... but I like it so I'm going to choose to believe it's true.  :P

I've been reading The Black Jewels trilogy by Anne Bishop. Always nice to get new inspiration when I'm at a wall in my own writing. (that and between edits!)  ;D

I've also loved Karen Marie Moning's Highlander series too bad she hasn't done more. :-[

Hee hee!  Me too. ;D  It's so much more memorable than being suffocated.  There has to be some way to keep all these rulers straight.

On the last chapter of Lucky, by Alice Sebold. (She also wrote The Lovely Bones which is one of my favorite books.) This one is her auto-biography, beginning with her rape, and all that followed. It is quite moving.

I am reading The Lovely Bones right now.

Excellent! :) I love that book so much.

Having difficulty finding something else in the bookshop that interests me... I ended up just getting something cheap so I can read on the tube.  :-\\\\
Finally living with my Husband in London after 6 1/2 years together but apart... and loving my life!
