Ooooooh I love Erewhon and 1984. Now, though, I'm reading The Country Formerly Known as Great Britain by Ian Jack. It's a review copy, and I'm loving how much I'm learning about the UK--hopefully it comes in handy on my KOL test!

The Robber Bride by Margaret Atwood.

I love everything I've read by Margaret Atwood, and so far this looks like another gem.

When I was in college, we had a seminar on Utopian/Dystopian literature:
1.  Plato's Republic
2.  More's Utopia
3.  Butler's Erewhon
4.  Huxley's Brave new world
5.  Orwell's 1984
6.  Skinner's Walden 2
7.  Zamiatin's We

Then there's William Morris' News from nowhere

Hey Mort and BD, thanks for the suggestion of "We" - it's brilliant and I'm falling into an abyss with it :D

I'm off work at the moment as there's some issue with my heart (extra beats, dropped beats etc) so I'm reading a lot.

1984 & Animal Farm polished off, I got one page into 1984 and realised I'd already read it more recently than I thought, and low and behold there was a copy on my shelf - grr! :D

Next three are  "Logan's Run", Battle Royale (seen the film/anime) and Walter Tevis's Mockingbird.

I've also got fountainhead but I need a rest :D

Have you read any of her short stories? Not all novelists can pull off a good short story, but I think hers are pretty brilliant.

I'm now reading Sleeping Beauties by Mavis Cheek. I needed some fluff.

I'm reading this one too. I do enjoy her writing.

That's definitely on my to-read list. I also read everything by her and The Handmaid's Tale and Blind Assassin probably rate as two of my favorite books of all time.

Have you read The Panelapeneid?
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"

I love, love, love Margaret Atwood! I read the Penelopiad last summer, it was every bit as good as the others. It amazes me how she can create such totally different landscapes in each novel.

I finished Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit by Jeanetter Winterson a couple of days ago. It really made me laugh as my mom was a bit of a bible beater when I was growing up.

I've now moved on to The Bee's Kiss by Barbara Cleverley.

Wuthering Heights. I've never read it before, but thought I would like to before watching that new film adaptation this weekend. I'm surprised at how dark it is, and that it's more a story of revenge than a love story. But I'm still enjoying it...

Ooooh....I recently re-read it myself (I read it once when I was in 8th grade and didn't remember much).  I enjoyed it, but yeah it's dark and Kathy and Heathcliff are not very likeable characters.

I just finished Out of the Silent Planet and started Perelandra by CS Lewis. Hopefully the second book is as good as the first.

NOt to get too far off topic, but I heard the new adaptation was on soon but can't find where/when it is showing.  Do you know when it is on and what station?

Yes!  I agree, and I love short stories.

On my list.  My favourite Margaret Atwood is Oryx and Crake, which should also go on the list of dystopian novels.
